Community fibre potential gaming issue

Hello,

Recently, I have had an issue with accessing one of my games.

I have attempted to play NBA 2k25 since release but I am unable to connect to the server whatsoever with an error code being provided; when I attempt to connect at my home. I have tried it on mobile data as well as another person who has CF and both times I have been able to connect to the game's online services.

I have had a router change as well as attempted to use a VPN post this issue and I am still unable to connect. When speaking to 2kGames they are not very helpful and are insistent it is to do with the ISP.
I have raised the issue with CF who have put it to the network team nearly 2 weeks ago, yet there's no timeframe to this issue being resolved.

When running pingpath and tracert 2k support insist there is a flag/block on Akamai CDN servers by the ISP. They are unable to do anything on their end. I am on CF's 1gbps service with no CGNAT.

Has anybody experienced this with community fibre before? Is this an issue which is fixable?

Thanks

It has been noted before that some of the public IPv4 addresses used by CF may have "bad reputation" and have been blocked on several services either due to their history of being used for malicious intentions or placed in incorrect IP geolocation regions. A lot of the times this is not really CF's or the new IP owners fault but the fault of companies using outdated IP geolocation databases or known bad actors IP block lists. Sometimes the fault lies with the IP geolocation company itself which takes a long while in updating their records or in parsing new whois IP data. Sometimes it's the company using those services not updating the data from the geolocation company. This is of particular importance these days where the lack of unallocated IPv4 addresses means that larger IPv4 subnets are being "cut" into smaller chunks and sold left and right for good money. Obviously this means that all the previous history about IP geolocation and bad usage doesn't get updated properly for this new "IP chunk" which carries the history of the subnet it was cut from and this leads to issues like the one you are experiencing.

CF Support may be able to switch to you a different public IPv4, if they are knowledgeable enough but these days those people don't seem to exist. One thing you can try if you own your own router and know how to do it is to change your WAN MAC address to something else using the MAC address cloning feature in your router. I don't use the CF Linksys router so I am not sure it supports that. That should get you a different IPv4 address but no guarantee that it will work, you solve one problem but have another one so you will have to try your luck.

There has been some conflicting reports as to whether you can change your router's MAC address without needing to call CF customer services to "reset" their MAC address cache. It seems to be a hit or miss. Do make a note of your current WAN MAC address in case using a different one doesn't work so you can go back to the previous one.

Thanks for the reply, I have tried cloning as well as reset MAC cache but to no avail. Initially, I did not have this problem but now for last 3-4 weeks it's been disastrous

Exactly what do you mean by “no avail” and “reset MAC cache”. Explain exactly what you tested and the results you got.

Sorry if I was unclear.

I changed my WAN MAC this morning on my TP link router app (A seperate router purchased from Amazon) that did not solve the issue as I was still unable to access NBA2K server for online play.

I called CF to try and clear the MAC cache which involved me disconnecting the modem and service advisor resetting it from their end, again there was no change still unable to connect.

I have used 2 different routers however the same issue still persists where I am unable to connect and there is an error code.

OK but did you check what was your WAN IP when you changed the MAC address? Did it change? What we are trying to prove is that the WAN public IP is changing. You can use any of the websites that show your IP like https://whatismyipaddress.com/. Note that changing the WAN IP may no solve your problem as you may get an IP within the same subnet which may have the same problem. Also you said you are not in CGNAT but have you actually confirmed that? Compare the WAN IP you see on your router with the one shown on whatismyipaddress.com, they should match.
