Community Fibre with Google WiFi

Hello all
New here and need to ask a question.
Today I am moving from BT to Community Fibre.
I currently use an Openreach mode and Google Wifi.
When the new modem is installed, what settings do I need to change?

Currently WAN setting is PPOE. I assume I just switch it to DHCP?

Thanks

Wan on dhcp (are you on 1g or 3gb?) and you clone the routers mac address on the wan side.

You don’t need MAC cloning for the 1Gb service. Are you aware CF does CGNAT for their 1Gb service now? (Ie no public IPv4)
It's not something that I'd come across before.
Looking into it, I can see why it could cause issues.
In practice is it a problem?

If you are doing any port forwarding at the moment then yes it will be a problem. For standard web browsing, streaming, downloading, etc it's not an issue.

Thanks, that's what I understood from the wiki page!
They've just been. Google WiFi in and working but the speeds are fluctuating per device. I'll give all of the points a restart later.
Just need to make sure that my PiHole is still working!

Thanks for the help both of you!

Make sure you turn off the CF router WiFi as you don’t want two WiFi networks at the same time. CGNAT doesn’t affect WiFi speed so your internal wifi speeds should be the same as before assuming you had 920mb symmetric speed before. 😉

Oh I simply unplugged the CF router and plugged my Google WiFi directly into the modem.
Seems to be behaving so far!

I did clone it but at some point talking to a tech support lady she told me that they dont care any more and you can just plug a different router. (I speculate it’s because of their router’s poor performance)

I didn’t clone anything, just plugged my own router and that’s it… as long as it’s configured as DHCP (ie, no PPPoE) it should work

Hi all,

I have moved to CommunityFibre and have a Google WiFi mesh setup. I have full speed upload (150mbps) but limited download (85 to 90 mbps).

I've spoken to Google and to CommunityFibre but only received very limited assistance that hasn't helped.

Can you help me resolve this? It's been this way for four months and I'm really hoping I can get the full speed soon.

Note: A wired connection to the CommunityFibre AdTran box is full speed, so there's something between the wifi and the adorn boxes that isn't happy.

Thanks!

@bweveringham I will suggest you start a new thread as you have a different issue.

Speed on my devices varies.

If I ask Google for a speed test i get 958mbps
My phone (Huawei Honor 10 (2018) gets 64mbps
My work phone (iPhone 13) gets 154mbps
My desktop wired into a mesh puck gets 364mbps.

The mesh is great for connectivity and Google Home integration but speed depends on a number of factors.

Personally im not bothered as its still better then the maxed 64mbps I was getting on BT.

Try plugging into your main Google Wifi router to check that it is recieving full speed.

Hi Arus, I've started a new thread for this as advised.

The speed across my devices is constant and consistent, and is the same if I use an ethernet cable or the WiFi. The issue isn't with the WiFi, I understand WiFi speeds fluctuate, this is about the network speed itself. There is something between the Google Home Router and the Community Fibre AdTran box that isn't gelling.

Hi Arus, I just connected to CF today. I have a Nest WiFi setup and have tried to connect the NestWifi to the CF ONT. It doesn't recognise the internet connection. Last resort I reset the Nest hub but that's also yielding the same results.
Did you do anything special on the Google WiFi unit to get it to recognise the CF connection? My Nest WiFi is set to DHCP on WAN.

Some CF users had to call CF customer services to reset the OLT MAC address cache. You can try that or if you router supports it you can try to clone the MAC address of the CF router.
