Hi everyone, I've recently retired and hopefully with lockdown easing will be spending more time at our static caravan in Filey, North Yorkshire.
I'm hoping you can give me advice on getting good mobile broadband, what router and SIM to get etc.
I been reading some posts on this site, it would appear the Huawei b818 is a good router. So any advice to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. The postcode of the site is YO14 0HU. TIA Dave....

The B818 will be fine, but I'd grab a load of PAYG sims and try them at home in your phone with some speed tests at different times of day to determine the best carrier to go with.

Pretty much what @Buggerlugz said, if your phone is not too old (2-3 years).
You can start with your current operator.
Having done a quick check, your area seems well covered by all of them.

To check Vodafone, you can get a Voxi or Lebara sim. To check O2 you can get a Giffgaff sim, for EE there's To The Moon and for Three there's Smarty.
It's usually easier/cheaper to test via these virtual operators.

No I wouldn't use to the moon they speed restrict. EE pay and go is probably the best as all EEs MVNOs are throttled.

VOXI is best to try Vodafone with as it's basically Vodafone with a different name slapped on. It shows as vodafone in my signal bar for god sake!

It's best to try three with SMARTY as you said

O2 is probably best to test with Lycamobile due to heavy offers often applied so attainable for quite cheap.

Thanks buggerlugz, Lucian and bubblesthefish6. That sound like a plan. I forgot to add I'll want to stream a few movies etc so would you advise an unlimited package?
Thanks again Dave.....

Almost definitely. They’re cheap enough - especially when you take into account the cash back deals you can get. Vodafone unlimited with cash back can work out to only about 15 a month.

Would a limited speed (60Mbps+?) actually pose an issue - depending what speeds were actually achievable in the location hitting the limit might not even be possible, so for me it wouldn't be something that would be a big concern for occasional 'holiday home' use. Though it would also depend on how it was priced vs an 'unrestricted' plan (FYI EE PAYG is also AMBR limited)

50/20 is still likely plenty fast enough for most things, including streaming

I say EE PAYG is AMBR limited... but I believe its set to 450down (not sure on up), so you could probably not consider it limited in 95%+ of locations.

Yeah the 450 is nowt like the 50/20 limits. I believe 1pMobiles limit is a mere 20/10 so I guess it could be worse. Also, TTMM don't do unlimited plans so if EE were the best, you'd have to use a different operator on EE or EE themselves.

If you get good Three coverage / speeds(test with a free sim), then Smarty/Three offer a free month + 10 pound additional credit, after the first month. I don't want to get banned, but here's a referral link anyway: https://i.smarty.co.uk/5OGJrGx

Unlimited is 20/month. I've been using them since I had to move for the pandemic. Works well enough for me.

I have a referral link from my old shut account still for some reason, haven't a clue why they kept it active😆😆

Can you use that SIM as it has calls and text attached to it. Pardon my ignorance I'm new to all this.

In fact it's often far cheaper to get a phone sim as they aren't allowed to stop you using it in whatever the hell you like unless it's dangerous in some way or other to the network

Thanks for the advice. It's really going to help me. So I'm off to get some free Sims to see which one will be the best. Probably Huawei b818 router unless you advise a different router. Thanks again guys.
