Confused first poster - Need 1Gbps line for business

Hi all,

First post - found ISPreview while searching for some clarification on costing of leased lines. What a great site & forum!! I've already learned loads in past hour!

I have a question, and I'm hoping its not a issue to ask here...?

I've been getting some quotes for a 1Gbps circuit for our business (HP10 post code area) and was impressed with a £700/month/36m/Free install via voucher quote from M24Seven.. I then stumbled on this article - presumably reputable(?): https://www.amvia.co.uk/blog/1gb-leased-line-costs and now I'm confused again.. No one (certainly not the 5 ISPs I asked for quotes from Zen, A&A, M24Seven, BT & TT) was able to come anywhere close to the stated £500/month price OK, I know we're not IN London, but...close..ish. I searched for them (Amvia) on here but no results found...?

Is that pricing accurate..? I understand there are some specialist ISP ( hyperoptic etc..) that might be in this range.. AFAIK, we are not in area covered by any of these... Just normal Openreach green boxes and DSL/FTTx... Have I missed something? Are they presenting "optimal condition" pricing or is that actually a normal range? I've been on SamKnows and used various availability checkers but they are ( pls correct me if wrong!) predominately for DSL/FTTC...? Are there services I can use to investigate all options for a location or is it just a matter of contacting ISPs individually to get a quote? Any tips /advice greatly appreciated!

The cost can depend upon a lot of factors, such as the scale of Service Level Agreement involved, package features and whether it's dedicated or share capacity you're buying.

On top of that the biggest differentiator can be the underlying network operator, particularly in today's market where we now have a growing number of alternative networks that are all competing for customers.

Different areas will of course have availability via different networks, so prices can vary. However £700 for 1Gbps does broadly sound about right for the service you’ve looked at. If that area were covered by a different operator, such as Cityfibre (sadly they aren’t present), then you might pay less but I'm not sure if anybody else operates there (might be worth checking Virgin Media Business).

seems like normal prices to me. I was quoted north of £300 for 100/100. But why would you need 1Gbps ? Or you just want gigabit ?

The 700 from M247 seems a very good prices for a 1 gig dedicated bandwidth what contract length is that?

I don't see any provider getting close to the 500 you have said your willing to pay maybe 2-300meg depending on the install cost and contract length.

Hi all, Many thanks for the replies! Very helpful!! I spoke with Amvia today and,.. I have to say I am impressed. The quote they gave me is really good.
@TheMatt - we need the 1Gbps line because there will be ~120 people in office using cloud services and VoIP - atm, we have 40 ppl onsite and the GEA line runs redhot (130/60Mbps).
Contract length for all quotes is 36 months (pretty much a standard these days.. can get less but price jumps up). The SLAs are 99.993% and backhaul/transit all checks out - good routes etc.. So, I guess I'm really just looking for some ppl with experience with Amvia to say "All OK"... Their trustpilot score is v good... and I've already had someone from Spiceworks confirm they are very pleased with them. Looks like I may be pulling trigger if I don't find any gotchas.

We tend to focus more on consumer ISPs, so it's a little hard to judge Amvia. I have however spoken to them on a couple of issues in the recent past and they've always been very helpful, but that doesn't say much about the wider service quality side.

Ahh, OK. Excellent advice/info ManofMeans & Mark! Thank you both!

I take your point ManofMeans - all your observations are super helpful! The lack of listing on peering DB would be helpful to address.. and using LCN as webhost is a questionable choice,.. unless you are beholden. How did you connect Amvia to AI networks (aka Advantage Interactive, LCN.com, ServerChoice Ltd.)..? I see the whois data from domain but was there something more..? If they are resellers of AI, is that something to be concerned about? I'm going to ask them about it all while taking a step back from any decisions.

As Mark experienced, my chat was a pleasant enough experience and they were helpful/professional etc,.. but as you state Mark,.. this does not inform on anything meaningful. In addition , other than the TrustPilot reviews (which I do consider to be somewhat reliable) I have not found any further reviews... The quote I got was for £500/month, 36 month contract which I'm certainly interested in... but only if it is the real deal. I'd rather pay more for a reputable/quality service than save a bit and suffer...

Again, thanks so much for your time & observations! Sorry to deviate from the consumer focus of the site - I will certainly contain the topic to this thread.

Just wanted to add that I had another chat with Amiva - again, very pleasant/helpful.. They are indeed a reseller (hence no peeringDB listing) and were unwilling to tell me who for fear of me going direct to that vendor. I asked if it was AI but no confirm or deny.... Should I be alarmed they are unwilling to disclose this..? Its not like I would go direct since I suspect the margins are pretty thin anyway.. I'd expect the "value add" in the direct management which, if the initial conversations are an indicator, would be useful and a clear benefit....

Traceroutes and looking at IP range look up in RIPE etc.

Advantage Interactive, LCN.com, ServerChoice Ltd appear to be all owned by the same people.

Also doing some digging on the directors of Amiva he was involved in a few others one of which he/they sold to Daisy for £6.1m and a short while after started Amiva.

Impressive sleuthing! I take it this is with a view of how stable/reliable a provider might be... as a business..? As in, exercise caution,.. hope they have sustainable business model...

And the quality of the line is essentially down to peering and tail end? (someone clever tipped me off to that :) )

Again, thanks for your time and advice!!!

If they didn't have a good business model Daisy wouldn't have bought their previous one so I wouldn't be put off by it.

Its mainly about capacity with high bandwidth circuits

Heard good things about Virtual 1, they use tails from Virgin Media, Openreach and TalkTalk for sure. Worth checking out?
