Connecting xbox 360 in halls of residence

Hi guys

I have recently moved into halls of residence at UCA in maidstone and I have unfortunatly had to sign up to keysurf as the university has sold the right to internet to them.... I have just one internet cable from the wall into my laptop. Now I wanted to use xbox live as well but it is being very probmatic i cant just take the cable from my laptop and use it for my xbox because stupid keysurf requires a log in page every time u want to go on the net. I sent them a email asking if it is possible for a router so i can use the extra ports for my xbox. but they replied saying unfortunalty the connection of games consoles is not compatible at your site..... Im sure it is possible can some one help me!!!!

Thanks

It is not uncommon for university halls of residence to block certain Internet services with a firewall, although some will usually give you remote access to change the filters on this for your own connection. However in your case it sounds like they have put a WAN authentication prior to the TCP/IP Internet access, which will indeed cause you problems. Seems somebody else posted a similar problem in 2006 but for whatever reason it was never answered:

The way around this is to login with your computer and then turn your PC/MAC into a server for your XBox, thus the console would connect its network through your computer first. However it has been a long time since I needed to do anything like that and you will probably require a second network card or wireless adapter (if your 360 has the wi-fi stuff in it).

Setting that up is going to be a nightmare, I know it would take me a few hours to work out the best method and even then I suspect they will still block the 360's P2P using multiplayer service anyway. I might be inclined to try an old fashioned proxy server solution but this would probably only add to your confusion.

If you can get a good Mobile Broadband reception/coverage then you might be better off buying one of those services alongside a 3G/HSPA compatible router or device like Three's MiFi. Then you could connect your 360 via Wi-Fi to the Mobile Broadband link:

However latency on 3G Mobile Broadband is variable and I don't know how the 360's service would cope with it. You'd also need to avoid big downloads on XBox Live.

thanks for your reply i have sucsessfully brought a router and i have been able to connect to xbox live the only problem i have now is that it keeps disconecting every 10 mins or less im not sure if this is because of the routers settings or it is just the connection being crap. The router is a Netgear WGR614

I've tryed useing my xbox 360 over 3G with orange and three.
Both were to laggy, my orange has 3G+ but cant get a speed over 50k and as for three i have to go outside for it to work sometimes.
I wouldnt recommend 3G for anything over than web pages. :(

I have to say normaly its around the 200ms mark, but weather affects it aswell

Mobile Broadband is variable so some will see good performance and others not, location and local network capacity seem to be the key factors.

I see what you mean

Hi all. I live in military accom and have keysurf providing the internet. (awful system) I've had it working for a while now.

You need a router with your pc/laptop and 360 conected to it. Log in on the computer. go to the cmd prompt type in ipconfig/all

in the second paragraph you will find the pysical address. note this down.

On your 360 go to network settings then advanced then use aternative mac address. Input the numbers you got from your pc leaving out the dashes. select done then try and connect.

should work has been working fine for me.
