Connection drops

ISP Rep
After a day away from home I switched my pc on last night and after 10mins the adsl connection dropped.

I'm on AOL 512kbs (never had any probs before)
BT Voyager 100 modem

The power light is on and the adsl light. The data light comes on when I am downloading/ surfing but after 10 mins you can see the data light just drop.

I have uninstalled the modem drivers. I dont use AOL software. I even did a system restore with Ghost.

I watched the problem happen this monrning and this time observed a kind of hiccup in that the modem power light also dropped with the adsl light going off. After a 20 seconds or so they were both back on.

I use a little program called cidial which records an error 668 ras hangup??

When the system boots up, the modem power light and adsl are on and are stable.

So, I'm wondering if the modem is faulty or if there's a power drop on my system feecing the usb modem.

I checked the line with BT and they say its okay - However, this was automated so I have reported the fault online for a more thorough check.

I have spoken with AOL and they are sending me a modem. They supposedly checked the line and did not fault it.

Could it be all this hot weather? According to a little prog I have my pc is running at 32 degrees.

All positive feedback and comments appreciated.

Thanks :)

i Had a problem with random disconnections, it turned out to be i had my modem telephone line connected through my surge protector that was reducing my line quality.

I have had customers with similiar problems, from what you have described it sounds like it is the modem, if it was just the adsl light going off it would be your line.
This is one of the reasons I recommend to my customers an adsl router, you can check the line without it being connected to the computer, as you can pick up an adsl router for approx £30 & have more security, it is well worth it.

Thanks pcblues. Having never used a router, will it be easy to set up on AOL, for use with bittorrent?

:)

richard, a router is dead easy to setup for AOL, all you will need really is your AOL username and password. As for Bitorrent just set the router to forward the port the app uses to the machine you run the software on. I have a Linksys WAG54G (running the Italian firmware (long story)) and not had any real problems.

onephat said it all :)

Just make sure you have a network card/port in your computer. If you haven't got one you should be able to get one from Broadbandbuyer
As far as the ADSL Router is concerned everyone has their favourites, this is what get for my customers (good price)ADSL Router & a lot of them are on AOL.

Interesting!

My brother suggested disconnecting all my usb stuff except my modem. I have been connected for well over 1/2 an hour. I did have 5 usb leads connected. Perhaps I need a powered usb hub and not a modem.

As I didn't try the pc when I got home and disconnected the usb leads immediately, maybe I should connect all the leads again - If all is well then the problem lay with AOL or BT.

I'll report back on this one.

yeh DEATH TO ALL USB MODEMS!!!!!!!!!!! sorry

RRU,

Before you go any further have a think about your future internet requirements.

Are you likely to have more than one computer or laptop?

Are they likely to be placed in different rooms?

If so, go for a wireless router.

As we speak, I'm keeping company to my dear wife while she is somebathing in our garden. I'm also doing some work in my laptop, I just sent documents to the printer that is located in my office 2 floors up. I'm also surfing the Internet ;) , I can do all this thanks to my wireless router. I only wished the coverage was another 150 m longer and I would be sitting on the beach :D

Thanks Salvador for the good advice, and Mel for the information inc link.

I had a Voyager 105 delivered this morning but I am seriously looking at the router option.

........and I'm here in an office looking across at a dull Leeds - just 70+ miles away from a beach :(

Just a note about the wireless router option, totally agree with salvador re: future requirements etc but you would need to then look at the size of your house, garden & thickness of walls, no. of rooms in between etc.
Speaking from my own experience wireless routers are great for the mobility they give you but the range can be affected by all of the above.

The wireless routers are being produced now that take away the risk factor of whether the signal will be strong enough or not & if you live in a largish house they would be the ones to go for.
As you would expect they are more expensive.
Here is a link to a page demonstrating the increased performance:
