Connection Issues (Packetloss)

Well, i just registered here as i was looking around for a new ISP possibley when my Contract with plus.net Finishes.

I've currently been experiancing many problems in the past week with my ADSL Connection im situated in Warrington @ The Padgate exchange which is just like 500 paces away from my actual street.

Anyway to the problem in detail, im a young guy i dont pay for the connection myself, my parents do but its mainly for me as i game ALOT with games such as UT2K4 many hours spent sat infront of my PC during nite, and late nite hours. Now i started getting Packetloss on ANY server that i tried playing 2K4 on so i got my trustee program PingPlotter out and sure enuff at several different hops i was getting Packetloss, tried alot of other servers out and then again yep i get packetloss at other hops also, then i come across gettin packetloss @ a Plus.net hop so i phoned up the customer support this time i got answered after just a few minutes and yet again they think im thick and don't know my way around a PC like the many other times ive called up before, at this time which was yesterday evening i was also having speed problems like my line as 450Kbps rather than the 1MB Line my family pays for, then today the speed clears up sure enuff, but still the packetloss which effects gaming dramatically. I raised a ticket yesterday, and it took the support team well over 12 hours to even bother to post and then i get told to test my line speed on the BT Special Engineers one or so..
Tested it and my line was dipping.

Results were.
738,957,775,957,800,917,796
kilo bits per second (Kbps)

Now as u see i get big dips way below the 950 average i shud be getting which is caused by the packetloss but it seems none of the actual technical support know much about the networking side of things. I maybe 17 but i have been online now for 5 years. So maybe i can get some decent responses on here.

o and the reply to my ticket that i gave my BT Test results its way over 12 hours again and no response - So much for 24 hour support, and the ticket clear up thing doesnt work on the plus net site, apprently they aim to get around too ppls @ around 4 hours and max around 8 if i understand it correctly.

- Side note. There was this one time where i just upgraded my PC to a new Asus K8VSE Deluxe Motherboard and 64bit processor, was running on 1GB DDR Memory and 250GB HDD with a Radeon 9800XT GFX in it, and a Sound blaster Live card in it.. And i was having problems with my PCI ADSL Card not authenticated or something, and i get told by the Support guy that my PC Doesnt have enuff power to support the modem in it, and that i shud go out and buy another Modem. Not having a real bad go at Plus.net but some people at your customer call centre must be Trained monkeys.

Btw. Anyone else experiancing problems recently in past few days or last week with the ADSL Service i know other ppl outside of Plus.net who are on ADSL also experiancing the same Packetloss issues [ Gamers i know ] - Was main reason for this post

Ps. For Plus.net guy if u want to look up my Ticket ID its : [13492831] [ User - Freakishly ]

O and i got charged over £100 for my Setup fee last october at begin of my contract
If only i cud have cable all these issues wudnt be a problem i wud have saved alot of time and effort and money, if i cud have cable 4 years ago, but still Everyone on the other side of the street can get Cable but not our side :D.

MD.

Speeds on the PN system have been erratic for a couple of weeks, this may or may not be down to BT. All isp's get problems which are annoying/frustrating but just hang in and they will get it fixed (eventually).
My speeds are jumping from lowest 360 and highest 480 so you are not alone, my isp is also PN.

Customers should no longer be experiencing problems as the transit links are now running correctly. If you are still seeing slow connections or packet loss then please disconnect and reconnect to resolve this.

14/09/2004 @ 20:22 External Connectivity Problem
We are currently investigating a problem with one of our transit links. This may mean that some customers may see timeouts and slow traffic accessing some websites.

We will post a further update shortly.

Case of power down and restart ADSL Modems/Routers :)

Dont know about packet loss (not been playing Day of Defeat recently and the ISPR chat forum isnt so dependant on ping times/packet loss) but I have noticed that my 1Mb connection has been 850ish recently (with variation). So must be a +net problem.

There are few threads relating to this in the internal forum. As I have been reporting this for the last 3 weeks, can say it is a general problem not just locally, unless you are on the same exchange as me i.e. Inverness

But there is a problem, which I dont think with BT raising the limits helped, at a guess most ISP got caught out and don't have enough Active pipes for the demand. I have been getting packetloss from 4.30pm onwards since Sunday 12th Sept, i.e. when schools are out and the internet gets a bit hit in bandwidth use.

Well i have tried leaving my PC off and unplugging from the wall like Plus.net always say to do, but suprise suprise it still never manages to work, and yeh i think your right Gus i think BT have rushed it all and f****d up some places, because it doesnt matter where i ping to i still get the packetloss at any random hop, i really think its BT's problem with what they have been doing and they need to sort it quickly cos there messing around with alot of ppl who go through BT Line, and im in Warrington in Cheshire, i know another guy who is in the midlands he also has the same problem.

I think it seems to be midlands upwards that has the problem and generally down south is ok.

Well I have been monitoring this at peek times and now always get packetloss in evenings. I had asked PN if they where ready for the increase in bandwidth on 6th Sept when the changes where annouced on ADSLGuide and said they where. Obviously not according to some plusnet customers with the peek time results coming out.

I've always been a PN supporter mostly except for there bill dept., but they had 2 months + warning of the changes, last time this happened they manged to get a new pipe active in a month to meet the demand, so another 2 weeks and time will tell.

well not just plusnet, i have noticed with aol speed has dropped and packetloss has got worse.

especially in games, used to have a smooth 30 or so ping to good uk servers, now about 60 maybe higher.

my exchange code is red though and i also think the vnps are full up at peak time.

as I said on plusnets forums..
[WinMTR Results removed]
judging by the massive packetloss, looks more like a BT problem rather than an Individual ISP problem, Plusnet included :hrmph:

Hi there,

This is something that we are working together with BT on to try and resolve as we have had several reports about this over the last couple of weeks and it is obviously not acceptable. We expect it to get resolved this week.

kind regards

***** connection

im in aberdeen and for the last three weeks have been having big probs serfing very slow then speeds up when i say slow 20 mins to open site , some times if i hit refresh 5or 6 times things springs into li  ve , kazza and lime wire usless , but speedtests fine and file downloads fine just serfing , problem been sent to bt after a week of trying all that plus net suggested even tried dif browser thinking of migrating to central point

I have been with plus over 18 months, no real problems until my line re-graded to 1MB, now getting packet loss on a daily basis, and my pc aint connected at all during the night. I try winmtr every morning but there hasn't been any change in over a week, i.e., packet loss every time I try it. Hopefully BT will manage to sort this out soon, I wouldn't blame Plusnet, after all, they are only as good as the service BT supply to them.

Hi Keith,

This does not actually sound like the same sort of thing and more like an actual fault on your line. If you disconnect when experiencing problems, leave it for a few minutes then connect again, do you get the same problems?

I would advise raising a fault ticket (running through all the tests advised on the wizard) and we will investigate it further for you.

kind regards

Luke

Cheers for the reply Luke, I have bought a new router today so I've just got it set up and of to run winmtr for a 20 mins or so. If I'm still getting losses I'll raise a ticket with you,

Many Thanks
Keith

Try 'Tools/Options' and delete the Temp' Internet Files. It may pay to check the settings too.

HTH :)

All our ADSL products are now IPstream. We did used to offer DataStream, but there were too many issues relating to these products so we stopped selling them.

kind regards
