corrupt downloads

Any advice welcome..

im recently having more and more corrupt downloads that its very offputting downloading large game demos or suchlike. i downloaded a 2gig demo three times this weekend for it to have corrupt files in each one, downloaded from 2 different places. i also downloaded a 700mb file this morning that also had corrupt files in it. Is this something at my end? a router setting ? or something at my isp end ? its really annoying, and isnt the first time this has happened, but hasnt been as bad as lately. any help most welcome.

thanks

Are you using a download manager? I suggest FlashGet if not.

There was a time when I was using a dodgy hosting provider in America.. when I downloaded things from my server they often ended up corrupt..

I resorted to putting recovery records on RAR files and then repairing them once downloaded at my end.

Moving hosting provider solved that little problem.

What ISP are you with?

Have you got your download manager set to look for mirrors?
Maybe it is combining data from two or more locations - one of which contains a slightly different (or corrupt) copy?

personally l only use flashget, lve tried getright and many others however lve never had a broken download from flashget all the others l found dropped a file now and then.

yeah i thought it might be the mirror thing, but the last couple of files ive downloaded without download manager have also been corrupt, took a couple more goes to get a good file. not sure what to make of it really.. ive had this problem in the past but its been fine for a fair while now, not sure what could be the cause. is a nuisance for downloading larger files to find out they cant unpack or something.

Friend of mine had that recently and the weird thing is that it usually only occurs on MS Windows systems, since the problem went away under Linux. Though as Tom says it's often also associated with mirror sites.

I know that the demo for PC game 'World in Conflict' caused a lot of problems like this for people recently.

ive not known these problems for me for a fair while now.. but just started happening again this last week or so. i downloaded a 2gig demo 3 times each with corrupt files, one at 700 mb once before the next time it was fine, and also i downloaded openoffice yesterday, which also took 2 goes before it was fine, as first time was also corrupt.. no idea what it might be.. ive tried download manager and no download manager, didnt make much difference.

well, i tried the flashget program, and it still downloads broken files.. i even searched for stuff that didnt come rar'ed, but just in normal .exe format, and they still came down broken. its anything of any size thats usually broken.. larger files.. not really sure where to go from here with this one.

Ask somone who doesn't use Fast4 to try downloading just to check where you are downloading from isn't already corrupted.

yeah i could try that.. but ive tried numerous download locations, numerous files/demos,. and each time, anything thats 'big' always comes back corrupt. ill see if i can ask a friend to download something big im trying tommorow.

Most of these downloads are via the HTTP protocol rather than FTP I assume? Have you tried downloading both with and without the OpenDNS settings?

mostly http,. altho funny that you mention that,. i downloaded the same file that ended up corrupt 3 times,. then i downloaded it through ftp,. and it took 2 goes but ended up fine.

i have opendns setup, but have only just switched to it, so will give it a try.

well,. a couple weeks later,. and im still having corrupt downloads.. im surprised ive not ended up in fast4's naughty corner lately with the amount of re-downloads ive had to do until i finally get a working download.. today alone ive downloaded the same demo 3 times at nearly 800mb each,. its getting ridiculous.. i hope it isnt anything to do with my ram or hd, as i cant really afford new of either :( arrgg. haha
