Could BT care less about security?

I posted the "Is BT invading my computer" note below a few weeks ago. Since then I have been "probed" by other BT ADSL users with the Code Red virus at least 20 times per day, and the number continues to grow (I have now shut up my alert option as it was getting irritating).

I contacted BT with a list of over 20 IP addresses, informing them that these users had viruses and suggesting that they contact them with instructions re disinfecting. First, "Support" told me to contact "Abuse". Then "Abuse" got back to me with a Dear Sir/Madam note saying they were sorry I had been infected with an "email virus" and that they had contacted the BT user concerned.

I have not heard again from them since I pointed out that I hadn't been infected with an email virus, and that there were over 20 BT users listed in my previous email. They have not even answered my question about whether or not I was wasting my time noting down the IP addresses of the users trying to access my system so that "Abuse" could get in touch with them.

It appears that BT couldn't really give a sh*t about security, and I find this a little bit worrying.

I am not particulary concerned for myself. I use a Mac and have a pretty efficient firewall. But other BT ADSL customers are merrily infecting each other at an exponential rate, and BT are doing nothing about it. Where will it all lead?

All I wanted to know was whether or not they were doing anything about it, and if they wanted me to continue to send them the IP addresses of other BT customers who are apparently infected with this worm.

I thought I was doing them a favour, but they don't seem to want to know.

Keep sending them in. ISP abuse departments very rarely get back to the original complainant with the results of a complaint.

I suppose an ISP would act on the grounds that they'll keep getting emails about the reported abuse until they stop the abuse from happening - if you follow...

Certainly won't make things worse by pointing out things like this anyway.

Have you ever considered that the people who are probing you might not be as inncocent as you would like to think ?

Perhaps BTI/BTO is becoming the "preferred ISP" for hackers because of BT's "laid back" attitude to security ?

I would suggest that all ISP's should give new users more inforation on the hazards of connecting their PC's to the internet, but beyond that (IMHO) using a PC without a firewall & virus checker is about as reckless as riding a motorcycle without a crash helmet. <img src="graemlins/shrug.gif" border="0" alt="[Shrug]" />
