daft question

What does p2p mean?

Actually I have loads of questions about broadband small print but this one is really bugging me.

I'm caught up in the v21/biscit/netservices/ezeedsl fiasco (don't go there if you don't know!) and I'm looking for a stable and reliable ISP so I'm reading the small print rather than just looking at the price tag (although that is still important as I'm only need bb access at weekends (have it free mon-fri, curtesy of university) so I'm not prepared to pay a lot.

A question is only "a daft question" if you already know the answer. Asking for information re anything you don't know is very sensible.

There is also the fact that for every one person who admits his ignorance I'll bet that there are hundreds who would rather suffer than risk being laughed at. :crap:

So you could say that you may well have helped someone today. ;) :D

Lots of daft people on here myself included .The one thing about computer forums is the willingness of members to help others . It a fine English tradition :D

for everything just go to google.com and if that doesnt work then well who knows what will lmao

Peer-to-peer networking (P2P) is an application that runs on a personal computer and shares files with other users across the Internet. P2P networks work by connecting individual computers together to share files instead of having to go through a central server.

Nodrog sorry I mean no offence but I am one of the oldies to Me British embrases the Whole of the British Isles including all the little islands scattered about the surrounding seas. 60years ago at school thats how we were taught . All this PC stuff is beyond me .(they say you can`t teach an old dog new tricks). I am even more confused with some of the new Names of countries who were originally part of the British Empire as it was called . Where we paid peanuts to countries for their wealth.

thanks Salvador - that makes it slightly clearer! Though I'm still not sure how it affects what I need from an isp.

If you intend using any P2P application, you'll need as much monthly bandwidth that they will allow, so the choice of ISP IS important :)

Every piece of information passing into and out of your PC is counted and P2P can be very high useage ;)

The best thing to look out for is Unlimited, but some ISP's say they give you unlimited then in fact bring into the equation what they call an FUP (Fair Use Policy) which means they can throttle your connection speed.

So read up on this as much as you can, but Unlimited is usually more expensive than the capped connection.

Mine is capped with a quite generous allowance of 30GB peak usage / 300GB off-peak usage per month. But if I go over this, they would charge me extra :)
