Data during calls question

I am running a dual SIM setup on my Motorola G 5G with VMO2 as my personal SIM and EE as the business SIM now in the settings for EE I've come across something I don't quite understand so I hope someone with a better understanding can explain it to me.

Basically it says: Data during calls and underneath it says allow this SIM to be used for mobile data only during calls.

So what does this exactly mean? I've not turned it on as I'm not sure, what I do know is despite both sims having 4G calling on, which ever SIM I am using at the time as a voice call, the SIM seems to lose a data connection eg I was using my phone as a hotspot earlier and during a call, I noticed the data connection had dropped which can't be right?

May not be right but here is my theory.

If you only have one SIM then both data and voice will use it. If you are on a call and the network does not allow VoLTE (policy, mast or signal level) at any time then you may drop to 3G for the call and hence also lose 4G data during the call.

Dual SIM phones can have two independent radios but this makes them expensive so most only have one called Dual SIM standby. This is fine for the own/work combination which is the main market.

If you have two SIMs you can set the second SIM as the preferred for Data or use this option to use SIM2 during calls. If this is set and you have WIFI/VoLTE calling then it allows you to use SIM 1 for calls, use SIM2 for data during that call and ensure the call on SIM1 is over 4G using VoLTE. Once the call is over it returns the data to SIM1 (if so set).

Remember even if the phone has WIFI/VoLTE and you have a 4G signal the network may still drop you to 3G (or even 2G) to retain the call (on SIM1 provider).

Whether this works in practice will depend on your SIM plans and whether you want the phone to use SIM2 for data. The settings may also conflict with any quick menu SIM change options the phone has.

I have personally had issues with the Motorola G 5G dual SIM (simply switching the SIMs during network testing). It simply locks up. Best keep it simple I'd say.
