It’s that time of year when everyone is frantically decorating, so here’s a little tip I’ve just learned. I’ll probably find that the whole world knows it and I just missed out. When using gloss paint the usual method is to put the brush in a jar of white spirit/turps when you’ve finished for the day. A decorator friend of mine said that he puts his brushes in a jar full of water. Don’t swish it around, just place it in the jar. This stops oxygen getting to the brush and it doesn’t dry out. As water and oil don’t mix the brush just sits there protected by the water. All you do next day is shake the water off and dry with some kitchen towel and off you go again. Saves a lot of white spirit and mess. I left my brushes for 3 days in water until I was ready to use them again and it does work. When you’ve finally finished then you can clean them with white spirit as normal.
