Defective phone?

I've got a Huawei P30 Lite which for some reason when charging on USB A to USB C does so very slowly while USB C to USB C (PD - Power Delivery) only charges if it wants to and after I've jiggled around inserting and reinserting the cable a dozen times.

I've gone though a dozen USB C to USB C cables and while some for some reason died on me, the others have no issue charging up my wireless earbuds.

As the phone is only worth £19 according to MusicMagpie but other than a poor battery life, the phone still functions, does this mean my Huawei is on the way out to the phone graveyard?

Ive found a Pixel 5A 5G for around £180 which has the specifications I'm looking for, I think it's a 2021 model - is this a reasonable price for a unused pixel?

The Huawei P30 Lite isn't worth fixing as it is slow, 4G only, and lacks a few bands (B32, B28a, B40).

I have issues with USB-C too on my Xiaomi phone, charger likes disconnecting randomly when I first plug it in but I can't reproduce it on my Switch

It also doesn't really fast charge now but it's a cheap charger unfortunately

I would strongly agree with @Mobyle regarding fixing, it just isn't worth it for most Android devices. I can't really fault the lack of those bands (especially if you're an EE customer) though.

Watch out, the Pixel 5a 5G was never released in EU/UK, so you are probably getting second hand stuff from other continents. They are also prone to some weird "sudden death" issues.
I would stick to the Pixel 4a 5G which from hardware pov is almost undistinguishable. It's same chipset, same ram, same storage.

I'd get one from Clove which also provide 12month warranty and it's half the price.

What's the battery life on them? As Gsmarena don't seem to have a review for them :(

As to the phone, it seems that MusicMagpie offer £19 but CEX offer around £79, is it really worth recycling the Huawei as it's working but the battery life is rather wanting as is it's charging outlook.

I have one in "fair condition" (so worse than "good") and the battery life is actually OK once I "calibrated" it.
Also I run LineageOS/MicroG on mine, much better battery life than stock.

It did die on my a few times when I was in the mountains in minus C and it was exposed.

Hopefully it won't be an issue, but there's always the warranty.

I'm switching to it from my Pixel 3a btw, as my main phone, for the 5G, so it's good enough.

How you calibrate a phone battery, L?

I have the Flip 4, but love something to fiddle with.

This is how I've done it and it definitely helped, but mine is an old battery (second hand Puxel 4a), not much point doing it on yours. Requires root access.
Not sure I used this very app or another, but the process description is spot on.

Using stock F-Droid app 😥

Well tried a different charging plug and using USB A to USB C seems to have fixed the sluggish charging however got home from work and fired up the Duolingo app as I'm learning three languages and the volume sounds like it's been turned all the way down to the point it's hearing aid time.

Checked volume and no issue there, Did have in jacket pocket which was a tad damp as I work outside and it was raining, would this impact on the speaker?

There was no moisture on screen though.

Also one for @Lucian but when you did the battery mod, did it make any noticeable difference in how long the battery lasted?

And what's it like with network coverage? Eg do you find it holds onto a signal where other phones might struggle to get a signal? Also where signal is lost, is it quite quick recovering it?

Lastly, what's the call quality like?

In my case I feel like it definitely did, maybe because this phone wasn't in the greatest of conditions, so I recommend it.

Seems pretty standard in this regard, can't say I noticed anything bad - or particularly good.

Audio is good, depending on network capabilities and codecs really. WhatsApp quality can be 👌👌👌.

I don't think you can really go wrong with call quality, my POCO had EVS support afaik and it's likely that this Huawei I'm using right now has AMR-WB

Just get a device that supports VoLTE and a network that has HD calling and you'll be fine

Ordered my new phone Friday, had a look at the Pixel range but they all seem to have user reviews complaining of various issues such as overheating or screen issues so went with Motorola as they seem to produce indestructive phones.

Had a Moto G 5G which is only available in the EU but works fine here which I accidentally dropped in a bucket of cleaning solution, worked just the same afterwards as it did prior so went with the Motorola G82 which offers a improved battery life over the Huawei, offers 5G and stereo speakers. It might well be a 2022 model but my current phone is a 2019 model so I expect least 2 to 3 years worth from it.
