So up till today lve been using Auslogics, but lve just found out l cannot do a defrag an optimise any more, just search and defrag files.

so lm looking for a new tool. ideally it would be great if l could automate it, maybe even have it working while my system is idle, wondered if anyone had any recommendations? l dont mind paid software but ideally l dont want to pay too much.

I've long since adopted an all SSD setup, precisely to avoid the hassle of defrags. Still in my app draw I do have both Defraggler and Smart Defrag (both portable apps editions) for when I come across an older HD.

as much as l wish l had a SSD l dont tend to use my PC these days and opt mostly for my laptop, just makes things easier tho its annoyingly how long it takes to defrag hence why lm looking for something that also degrags on idle.

trying out Glarys Disk Tools, but l'll take a gander at the above mentioned as well.

I've always used this: https://www.ccleaner.com/defraggler

Another +1 for Defraggler
Piriform publish some excellent free utilities.

Are you on Windows? I find Windows 10 does an excellent job. Silently, and without interaction.

Why can't it?

Also, I am willing to bet if you're using Windows 10 you've left the built in defrag scheduling on (it's on by default) so the odds are it has been defragging too - using a different method to Auslogics, and thus both tripping over each other and achieving very little.

Auslogics defragging tool kept on telling me to upgrade to pro every time l tried to run the longer defrag tool :/

also l turned off windows defrag :p

Windows 10 built in disk cleaner and defrag tools should really be the only tools to maintain your W10 machine these days. For these services, 3rd party apps are no longer needed

Windows 10 built in disk cleaner and defrag tools.

+1.

BTW, Defrag is not performance enhancement, it's not even maintenance, it's a fix / workaround.

Think of it like a road that goes to potholes in a matter of weeks because it was poorly laid. But it was cheap and gives a slight speed advantage when absolutely fresh. But pretty quickly traffic is swerving all over the place to avoid the holes. Defragging is trying to fill in the potholes, while there is traffic driving over it. This is not normal.

Defraggers and other 'essential' windows tools are not performance enhancements, they never have been. So now that Micro$oft have finally matured their product with windows 10, such tools are not necessary.

Of course, never run a defrag on a SSD.
