Qwest offers DSL services of speeds starting at 256k and do not normally consider line lengths of more than 15,000 feet (4.7km I think) to be suitable for broadband.

I'm afraid I don't know if other US providers have a similar limitation for DSL services, but it's probable, which may explain why cable broadband easily outsells dsl in the USA.

We had a customer (originally from the states) who said that the broadband we have here seems slower than the dial up they have there, companys have spent millions on putting putting in optical fibre cabling (Europe is based on on "old" copper which has a distance limit) and even where the cable is still copper, the states is very new infastructure with higher quality copper and other cabling infstructure which eliminates many of the problems.

You also have to remember our infastructure is very old compared with the states.

Morning all,

Something I just thought about.. the USA is a massive place.. do they have the same adsl coverage problems that we have in the UK.. max of 9km etc.. ? and longer distances providing lower speeds?

From all the people I talk to in the US and my g/f's experience of living there I have not had the impression that broadband provision has ever been a problem?

Anyone know otherwise.. and if its not a problem.. howcome it is here?

ADSL coverage is not much of an issue unless you are really out in the sticks.
The situation in the States though is differnt to the UK. The dominent method of delivering ADSL is Cable with perhaps Cable having something like 75% of the market. Its probably largely an historical thing as in the states TV & phone had always been largely supplied by cable.
