Dial up software - oppourtunity.....

Hi,

Don't know if this is the best place to post, but here goes anyway....

I work for a large multinational and as such we support a great deal of users who have comapny laptops. Now these laptops are fairly well ties down and the users aren't allowed to install any software onto them
All network settings, web browers etc are configured to run through company proxy servers and firewalls.....

A large number of users would love to be able to use their laptops for ocassional web browsing from home (without having to connect to the company servers etc....). Since they can't install any software on the machine, they can't....

I was wondering whether this could present an oppourtunity for a switched on kind of isp. I can see a way around this problem. Some thing like a small bootable linux distro on a cd, with some thing like firefox as a browser. This cd could boot the laptop connect to the isp via the inbuilt modem and simply bill to the users phone account. This way they could have internet access without installing anything on the laptop, pay their own bills and not have to worry about the firewalls etc.

Any takers?

yeah I know something like knoppix would be great, But....

I need it configured to dial in to a pay as you go isp. The account details would have to be pre-configured and it would have to be a shared account i.e. potentially allow lots of users to use the same account details to connect. I'm not worried about email accounts, they could use various web mail systems to get email access.

I wouldn't mind sorting put the linux distro if an isp could do the dial up business.....

There must be many 0845 services that don't validate the password and username or have identical ones for all users. If you want it to work from any number you would probably want to tack 1470 infront of the phone number to always send the CLI in case a user has his set to withheld (or choose an ISP that allows users to withhold their number).

There are probably many guides to show you how to produce your own customised version of Knoppix e.g. http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Knoppix_Remastering_Howto . As for an ISP allowing multiple users with the same password I think there are quite a few Pay-As-You-Go accounts that do this, for example, SurfAnytime - http://www.surfanytime.net/ -

Username : surf
Password : surf

Access Number :
0845 604 1528 (56k/64k)
(Calls charged at local rate)

:)

I think now; there is a fair bit of support for knows WinModems; which are uder Lionux called LinModems. Very obsure modems obv. won't be supported.

Check sourceforge or hardware developers site.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I'll have a chat with my boss tomorrow to see if I can drum up some support & take it from there.

Cheers
