Dialling to the UK with a Sipgate number

I have an 0203 ....... number with SipGate.

Can someone confirm that when I am in Italy next week I can dial UK landlines and mobiles at the same rate I can back here in the UK?

Thanks

TG

Wouldn’t be much point to VoIP if you couldn’t 😎

[…just make these calls from whatever client app your signed into your Sipgate with. Anywhere you can get an IP address will do…via Starlink in the Patagonian desert, should you so desire 😉]

Thanks Pheasant.

We are on a boat and I guess half the passengers will be WhatsApping their grandchildren instead of reading a book or supping a Campari.

I'm just thinking that if we need to call the UK to say a flight has been cancelled/delayed I can use SipGate instead of my cellphone.

Works pretty much along the same lines as WhatsApp. As long as you have a working data connection, then the connection back to the Sipgate servers just runs over the top. Sipgate don’t care if you’re in Epping or Egypt, Ilford or Italy.

Learning every day.

So if you are a Brazilian working in Thailand and needing to chat to your colleagues in Brazil you get SipGate to issue a Brazil base number and you can phone them at local rates from any country with internet?

My little understanding of WhatsApp is that the person at the other end have to registered with WA. With a SipGate number it does not matter who you call.

Yeh I just meant from the point of view that all these comms apps just run over a data connection.

WhatsApp is a closed ecosystem so yes every user needs to be running it. It’s also solely used on mobile handsets - not tablets, PCs or any other devices.

With Sipgate (and many other VoIP providers do the same) if you call another Sipgate subscriber, then all calls stay “on net” that is they don’t need to break out to the PSTN. Therefore they aren’t chargeable. Of course once you break out onto whatever local PSTN you’re calling, then charges accrue as local PSTN operators have charges into // out of their respective PSTN.

Do these vary depending on what Voip/SipGate number you are calling from?

For example if I lived in Thailand and wanted to repeatedly phone my family who were in England would I benefit by having a SIP number that was a UK one - rather than an Italian one?

Or if I was a Brit with a fiancee living in Hong Kong would I ask SipGate to give me a Hong Kong number?

As a point of note, WhatsApp works on tablets and PCs, either as an app or via a web browser, so you can have it on your phone but call and message from other devices, and all other devices receive new messages and will ring on receiving calls.

Sipgate will only give you telephone numbers based on where the account is registered, so you can't just pick a Hong Kong number with a UK Sipgate basic account.

There are many VoIP providers (and Sipgate business accounts) so it would be possible to be in the UK and have a Hong Kong number so your fiancee could call a local number for them and have lower or no charges to call you back in the UK, however those VoIP providers will either charge extra for the Hong Kong number or perhaps charge you for the Hong Kong to UK journey of the call, or a call set up charge. Unless you are a business needing a Hong Kong presence in the way of a local phone number, there are too many other ways to call someone across the globe for completely for free and even with video, to worry about trying to do it via VoIP I would think.

Fair enough. Missed that they had introduced this (apparently some years ago). There you go.

Thanks Pheasant and Phil. I now understand about the implications of local SIP numbers. I'm probably far older than you and come from the time you waited in for a long distance call booked in advance. How life has changed.

On the matter of tablets I have a Samsung SM-T715 which takes a Sim Card and I have also been using that to experiment with my assorted apps to use SipGate. As it takes a Sim Card it also works as a phone and will host WhatsApp. As it is over eight inches high it is not the most subtle phone to use - but it does work. I primarily bought it to use as a SatNav in a big car and it needs the Sim Card to work with Waze.

Tony, it's not completely clear to me which device you will be using Sipgate on, but if you'll be using a SIM from a UK network to carry the Sipgate data, that would imply that you have EU roaming (either because your network still includes it or because you've paid the daily fee for it).. in which case, normal phone calls back to the UK would likely be included anyway, without needing to use a service like Sipgate.

Thanks DJG.

I am using o2 and I think they have retained the EU roaming facility.

I'm also trying to learn about what can and can't be done. In December I will be in Panama City and I have to phone the UK to remind our "daily" to feed the cat........(I jest of course) but it is handy to know whether SipGate makes it less costly.

I used sipgate with my 0203 and my 01234 numbers abroad all the time, same cost. Bonus , it even makes the UK ring noise no matter where you are.

I use the SIP client on my android phone though. (I have a hardware one at home)

I’ve given up on the boxes now. It’s all via app (Acrobits) which is seamless and all in one place and goes where I do.

Yup me too, until Android 12 removed it from Google Phone :(
Ah that sucks. My asus is on 11 and still has it. Might be time to move to an app. Speaking of, I really miss the network provided apps. Like TuGo on O2 was great. I had like 4 devices capable of receiving or sending calls on my o2 contract which was awesome. Once I built a SIP to GSM raspberry pi setup to use SIP on several devices but yeah that was when I had time to do things.
