Disappointing FTTC speeds

BT Wholesale checker says 55-72mbps, Plusnet say similar. Minimum guaranteed speed 45mbps. In practice struggling to get 40mbps. Openreach came and had a look and suggested that there is a "tap" on the wire from their cable to the master socket. He tested at the main cable and got a couple more mbps but nothing shattering. I've just replaced the cable between the master and their cable. Hasn't made any difference but the DSL is training again so probably 10days before I see the results? Openreach engineer said its just one if those things, impossible to know how long the cable from the cabinet is etc.

Does that stack up? Annoying as I paid for a Tier 2 connection hoping to get decent speeds. 40mbps isn't ideal for 2 TVs streaming Netflix at 4K :(

Any comments?

This sounds a lot like the situation I have had with VDSL where I am, and really, there's very little you will be able to do to improve the situation. Is DSL your only option in your area?

(Sorry for the pretty useless response)

The only other viable option around here is probably 4G. Three (yes I know...!) seems pretty quick here, testing on my phone. It would mean buying a 4G router ( I sold my old one) but £20pcm for up to 75-80mbps seems a better bet... maybe? PS I used to use 4G at my place in the wilds of North Devon. I had to use Vodafone but it was fairly sucessful tbh. I was hoping to get a better service given that this area is FTTC.

Maybe once the training is done the speeds will pick up so be sure not to turn off or disconnect the router.

4G broadband may be significantly faster but you lose out on how stable and consistent FTTC is. That being said - if the speeds are really good day 80mbps+ then if it drops to 40 it’s not going to be that noticeable.

Vodafone and EE have a lot of capacity to support these speeds. Worth looking into.
