Ditch aol asap

Hi just an fyi...

After a year long 'battle' with aol that involved me phoning customers services and talking to tech chat about a million times over the course of a year and a half I've finally got a new ISP (after 10years with aol)

AOL customer services are idiots reading from a list of problems, they listen for a keyword that matches one on their list and then proceed to send you on a wild goose chase that normally involves resetting IE, reinstalling drivers, performing a 'quick restore' and when that doesn't work reinstalling AOL.

I told them on many occassions that my line could handle more than 2mb and they said i was wrong, I was limited at about 200kbps download (1890ish connection). my modem was syncing at nearer 4000kbps. So I phoned for my MAC code, the 'representative' (same indian call center) said she could connect me to the top package the 8mb service, to which I said well that's what I've been on since I joined 10years ago, she said, no I can really put you on it. I was livid, no I'll just have my mac code I said.

So it turns out all along that they were capping me but the fools at tech support are too clueless to work it out, even when you know more than they do and tell them directly what the problem is.

So I'm on o2 now, they haven't unbundled my exchange yet so I'm still on the bt line and guess what..... my speed doubled over night! Good ridance aol.

Missing their browser though grrrr. Spoke to another rep who said I couldn't use the browser once I'd left, downloaded 9.1, kinda works, ironing out a few creases

Just a heads up for anyone else aol is lying to

to be honest ld wipe all traces of AOL from your system, and on another point tbh AOL software doesnt do much apart from allow more access than ld be comfortable with on systems.. its not needed l was with them for around a year and l never installed it once..

Sorry to hear about your tale of woe but congrats for selecting a better quality of ISP. It just goes to show that if your line stats and exchange tests estimate speeds radically higher than your ISP currently provides then the ISP is more than likely to be wrong about what you can receive.

Don't forget to review O2:

Funny I should find this post now :p Today I called AOL for my MAC code.

Last Saturday I tried to visit a website that I visited before with no problem at all but this time I could only do it through a proxy server. So, I called AOL technical Support and you know the drill  In the end, I thought about using OpenDNS and problem solved

Last night I was just thinking that AOL is not getting any better, quite to the contrary, after 8 years it was time to find a better ISP.

So, when the Indian guy offered me 8 MB for £14.99 I said, thank you, but it's time to move on.

3 hours later the email with the MAC code arrived and 30 minutes later I was finishing my purchasing of o2 BB package. o2 has not unbundled my area just yet but I'm sure I will have a better connection from o2. ;)

O2, here we gooooo

Hey Rick,

Don't think you'll be disappointed, I'm actually using avant at the moment, it's a fast little browser. I used ePreserver to transfer all my favourites and emails (it's only £12.50). Using aol.co.uk to check emails for my old account.

I've only got good things to say about o2, had a problem connecting the rep says can you hold the line please, remote reset of the modem and all was fine, total call time about 2 minutes.
Download speed is now 400k+ hasn't lost sync yet, s'all good.

Let me know how you get on

Well, I'm not yet connected but I'm impressed with their communication. I have received sms and emails explaining what is happening since I signed up.

Yesterday I received the router but I don't think I will use it, unless I have to.

One thing that is confusing me, AOL speed is faster than ever at the moment  maybe they switched me to the 8 mb after my call, hoping I wouldn't use my MAC.... who knows?

o2 offer a crazy 50 day cooling off period, so you've got loads of time to make up your mind. Aol went the other way with me, it was slower than ever which made the switch that bit sweeter.
There was always some webpages that didn't work in aol for me, in avant they're fine.
I got the st780w router, compared to the prehistoric bt voyager 105 I was on it's a nice little router.
It's the customer service that's won me over with o2, as I understand it they haven't been going long so their customer base isn't that big, just hope things don't change when they grow.

OK, I'm connected to o2 now

I had problems installing their software on my PC, it found a firewall which I haven't got a clue what it is:laugh: I disabled the windows firewall, and I even removed Windows defender but it made no difference. Nevermind, I could still connect to internet so here I'm :D

The o2 router seems ok but I used to to connect, test, and back in its box for a rainy day  - I don't like equipment where you have no control, everything is done for you... so I continue using my faithful Netgear router.

The instructions I found on o2 website about using your own router are not quite accurate. It says there you should leave blank the user name and password - WRONG!!! - if you connect to the o2 router, 192.168.1.254, then under the label O2_DSL click on see more and there it is - your user name and password... unfortunately the password is encrypted so you must call CS and request the password.

So far, the connection is a little bit slower than my old AOL connection, but I'm told to give it 10 days and see if it improves....

I also called AOL and cancelled my account, just in case , and I kept my AOL email addresses for free.

So hopefully, things will get better soon.
