Do ISP's keep IP assignment log backups?

Currently researching the subject of privacy, hope this is the right place to ask. I know that ISP's keep IP assignment logs, and usually delete them after about 12 months. However I was wondering if they kept backups of these logs that remain even after they are deleted?

I know some companies keep backups of other elements of personal data, however I wasn't sure if it applied to IP logs.

Not sure of all the regulatory requirements, but I would assume it will vary wildly from ISP to ISP and we can't really know their internal procedures.

If I was an ISP, to avoid GDPR related issues, I would not keep a backup of those, but I'm hardly an expert on either ISP or GDPR so take it with a big grain of salt.

So there is a crucial point being missed here, which is that the ISP only needs to keep a 12-month log of those "Internet Connection Records" when actually ordered to do so by the Government.

I think it's probably reasonable to assume that the Government will order that for all the major providers, at some point (I think the system for all this is still somewhat in the late stage R&D / trial phase). After that period the ISP will want to delete them as it makes no cost or legal sense to retain it.

Just to add, when it comes to the "content" of your communications (messages etc.), that is a different matter. For that a warrant would be required and this would only be issued against targetted individuals, rather than as part of blanket surveillance for an entire customer base.

I used to work for a FTSE100 CP in a security role albeit this was five or six years ago and they kept IP allocation and DNS logs for 12 months which I routinely accessed.

Other 'information' I wasn't privy to was kept for six years.

I suspect that was under the more ambiguous pre-IPAct and pre-GDPR rules. Really what the IPAct did was set a clear law around something that was already happening, while GDPR put some big restraints on unnecessary data retention.
