don't bother with plusnet

It is very easy to knock any ISP with negative comments and I suspect no hands on experience.

I am willing to hear of any better value ISP than Plusnet, please let us all know of your choices.:)

I'd vote for Eclipse, though only just. I pay £18/month for unlimited (at least I've never got anywhere near a limit) 512. I can also temporarily increase line speed to 1mb for 5p/hour (2mb would be available for 10p if I wasn't too far from the exchange).

I have used PlusNet in the past, and my experiences were almost completely positive.

UKonline. Their FUP is actually realistic, they say that if you're connection is left on for hours and making others users on the network slower, they will investigate etc. and doesnt affect probably 98% of customers, unlike Plusnets. Plusnet seem to cut off your fingers if they get a millimeter past the barrier. I personally do not like such restrictive packages where somebody says "this is your limit".

I assume Plusnet are also not friendly towards networked computers, since 10GB shared between more than one computer will never be enough. Unless the connection is basically left un-used.

I believe ISP's should work out what it is possible for a connection to download in a given time period that they charge for.
If they cannot afford to give this bandwidth to their customers, they should either downsize their network, or reduce speeds they are offering. I know its idealistic, but in my perfect world, this is what would happen.
To these packages that offer 8mb with a small bandwidth limit. Why do these people need such fast broadband if they do not want a lot of data?????
Keep them on dial-up.

I was with Plusnet and found them reliable. They are perhaps the best run of all the major ISP's. Excellent informative web pages and when I came to leave they dished out the MAc without a problem. Naturally when I joined them I paid around £70 connection charge (which goes to BT) in order to be on a monthly contract.
Pay the setup and one can leave anytime one like!!
No one offers free setup with out at least a years contract
I have never had the least problem understanding Plusnets terms and conditions
I am now with an even better ISP, www.idnet.co.uk

Have you checked the plusnet forums recently!! You may be able to log in if they converted your account to a payg type etc etc - have a look..shocking contradictions have been shown by many many people - including people who wouldn't normally moan - customers who have been with them for 3+years nad 5+years...
Plusnet have no idea what they are doing at the moment. If you don't believe me, go and look in the forum, or on adslguide forum....

They were good , about 8 months ago....

NOT ANYMORE!

Just an update, with plusnet premier option 2 I am allowed 22.5GB on peak time which is from 4-12pm every day. At all other times I have NO LIMIT whatsoever. This costs £29.99 per month but I dont actually pay this as I have some referalls which deduct a few pounds from the monthly charge.

Now splang, come on and be fair, how much do you really expect during peak hours, I mean, 22.5GB is alot of data, and I dont know of any gaming or streaming that would take me over that monthly limit during peak hours and they havent imposed any further limits at all.

All I can say is well done Plusnet.:)

UPDATE:

Plusnet have now made an announcement stating that an " opt out " from the LLU is now available following the concerns raised over the move of some customers away from BT Wholesale to Tiscali LLU.

Good news for me, I detest Tiscali, and there is no way I will ever have any dealings with them, however remote.

You raise an extremely valid point. When I joined Plusnet though I joined with the promise of 100mb and no other limits (peak/nonpeak etc). I was disappointed to see this be slashed to 10mb peak time (when I tend to use it).

I am now with Nildram who offer 50gb peak and unlimited off peak for £25.99. I won't use 50gb a month but it is good that they also allow you to carry over any unused allowance into the next month - something that plusnet don't.

All I can finish off saying, is that all of you with plusnet spend more time making sure you dont go over your limit.
I download a lot at times and sometimes very little, but Im just happy knowing I never have to watch my amounts. Since Im certain im not in the top percent of bandwidth hoggers, therefore, I dont expect to be treated like them, unlike every plusnet customer now.

I have a premier account and occassionally hit the 15gb limit where they throttle your speed, usually when a new version of fedora core is released and I start downloading dvd images of both the 32 and 64 bit verisons.

What is annoying from my point of view, and this probably applies to other ISP's too, is the fact that for probably 2 months out of a year I will hit the limit and my bandwidth will be throttled......the rest of the year I don't get close to it. I think in the name of fairness ISP's should allow users who occassionally exceed the 'unlimited' limits to do so without penalty or restriction.

That said, I have lots and lots of complaints with Plusnet but the throttling of the service is not one of them as I can understand the need to have some limit for the greater good of all customers.....however, they like all ISP's should NOT market their service as unlimited or uncapped in the same way that they shouldn't market deferred hardware or setup costs as 'Free Setup' or 'Free Modem' 'Free Migration' or 'Free Connection' either.....they are all quite intentionally misleading statements!!!

15GB Cap For Premier????? holy s*** that has fell a LOT from 100GB when I was there  glad I'm not there now (can download 15GB in 2.5 Hours)

If you consider that 15GB of bandwidth for an ISP costs in the region of £7-10, with additional line rental charge of £9 from BT, adding in additional charges of staff, hardware and building costs (and they're still building ours, I have ringing ears to prove it) couple with the fact that there are no set limitations on off peak traffic, you can start to understand why our charges are as they are.

If BT drop their rental and bandwidth charges, we'll make changes to our ricing model, but we're hardly going to go about providing an unsustainble and loss making product ala Tiscali, Sky, Carphone, Orange, etc. I wonder if any Sky customers have tried demanding a refund yet :)

I appreciate that your connection has been unreliable recently. Would you be able to send me a username so that I can have a look into it?

You cant say anything about costs and providing a service until plusnet are providing some sort of customer support, and judging by the complaints on this site, they simply are not.

One person providing help on this forum doesnt help the telephone lines and ticket replies, which seem to be the main problem.

You're wrong, I can say what I like :) Well, within reason.

I'm not naive enough to even try to suggest we are a perfect ISP. We're not, but we are trying. There's continual focus on network and csc improvements currently, which, in the medium to long term, should see drastic improvements in the level of service we are able to offer.

One person providing help on this forum doesnt help the telephone lines and ticket replies, which seem to be the main problem.

A post in here, depending on the audience and the query, can answer a lot more tickets or calls than a calls/ticket agent would answer in a day. But I get your point.

I would like to think ISPr members have the chance to request help via these forums and ISP reps are free to reply. We have seen times when we had more reps sadly some were driven away let us not deprive the ISP customers on a rep willing to help.

So you are saying members should not be hostile to the rep in case the rep gets scared and runs off?

No rep can expect to have an easy time when the ISP is performing badly but thats no excuse, i think that most reps disappear because they cannot be bothered

Nope, I don't think that's what Kits is saying.

I don't expect everyone to be nice to me if service is poor. That would be rather unreasonable to expect. It's not a case of can't be bothered, it's primarily owing to there being other busier places which take up more of our time.

However, as I've previously mentioned, I'd be happy to address queries which are sent in my direction.
