Don't know if this has been asked before?

If this question's been covered previously, then apoligise.

I've read on many posts about users actual down speed being used-not the speed the ISP lets you believe is right-I'm quite pc literate but this is one thing I don't know how to check? can some nice kind person help please?

thanks

Not sure what you're asking either.

If its in relation to the BS you usually get from most ISP customer services, then it's best not to believe what they say who ever the company is. Quotes like "600kbps is a great speed for a 2mb connection" are sadly all too common.

The speed you get from your ISP depends on a number of factors, such as the quality of your phone line and congestion. Hence if an ISP advertises an 8Mbps package then the chances of you actually receiving that speed are pretty remote unless you live right next door to your exchange.

To get a better idea of what your line can cope with I’d recommend putting your phone number into the Samknows checker:

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php

I assume you’re most interested in an ADSL ISP and thus selecting ‘BT ADSL’ from the results will give you a rough run down of what your line can cope with. Be careful with the ADSLMax speed prediction as it’s usually about 30% too high and can be highly variable between different providers.

These predictions aren’t perfect, but they’re more realistic than your ISP.

Thank you all very much for all your replies.
I think Mark J. has the ghist of what I'm asking.

I know ISP's 'brag' about the download speeds they can give you and I know not to take that face value. I do understand the download/uploading speeds are governed by certain criteria, ie how far away from the exchange and how much line traffic there is.

My BT exchange is fortunately quite near so thats not a problem. As to how much traffic there is, I also know its to do with the times day/night I'm online too.
It's just my ISP (Pipex :(-for now) say its up to 8 Mb download and up to 448 kb upload. I found a site that I tested mine on after asking this and it read 4mg download, but can't remember upload. When I read members posts about their line speeds I was wondering how they obtained their info.

So I hope I've helped more -sorry I didn't explain properly fist time round, but I think now my question has been answered.

Can I now ask what other members think of the result I got from the test speeds please? BUT before you kindly answer, I've just also tried the link Mark J. posted and it came back as upto 3mg and can do more with Max?

You can obtain your connection (sync rate) rate from your router/modem. There's a guide on obtaining your stats for various modems and routers here:- http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm

If the BT speedtest is busy or doesn't work, there are various "speed test" sites that will give an idea of actual throughput. http://www.speedtest.net/ is a popular one.

However, if you have an IPstream connection, the BT speedtest will give far more information. If http://speedtester.bt.com doesn't work put your number in the ADSLchecker here:_ http://www.prodigynet.co.uk/menu.php?page=support/adsllinecheck ,it should tell you if your line is unbundled.
