Dreaded Spam

Bures

ULTIMATE Member
I am being deluged with spam by some character sending the body text as a “gif” attachment.
Consequently I cannot block the body text as its non existent.
Each incoming mail comes from a different address with different subject.
Is there any way with my Yahoo mail to block mail with “gif” attachments.
There doesn`t seem to be anyway in the Yahoo "options" menu
I currently use Mailwasher to see what`s on the server – is there any other method available to block gif`s ?

Have you tried using "does not contain" option from Mailwasher. try setting a filter that bounces mail that "does not contain" various words in the "body" of the email ( "and" "the" etc). test it first with "mark for deletion" so that you can see what Mailwasher is picking up.

I keep getting that exact same thing, i cant even work out why they are sending them cos they dont sell anything but its coming through my demon account and to outlook express. I cant work out how to block it cos its from a diff address every time

Ok, heres how to block images.

Few things to note first:

You use outlook to get these, not yahoo webmail, so im not sure if it will block the images when you just download them.

You say its a gif, I assume they block gifs as well as jpg's, but Im not sure.

Log into yahoo mail via the web.

Go to your inbox.

When your in, click on 'options' at the top right.

Click on 'spam protection'.

You will be on step one. If your downloading to outlook and dont usually use the webmal, I suggest turning spamguard OFF. Its always been very very good with me, but I would never want the chance of a missed email. Up to you.

Next step ignore as your using outlook/outlook express.

Now, the third step is what you want.

Choose either option, probably the last is the best for you. Make sure you press the 'set up spam protection' button, or it wont keep the settings.

Like I said, I dont know if this will work with outlook/outlook express.

Come to think of it, dont they have options like that of their own?

Best I can find for outlook express is view emails in plain text. Will give instructions on how to do if you like, but Im knackered at the moment! Will check tomorrow.

Old Dude,
I tried a filter with "Does not contain" words such as in, out, the ,a ..........didn`t work
I have also tried the block the images in Yahoo mail/Spamguard, the last option as you suggest...didn`t work.
The little blighters are still getting through.

As I recall Yahoo has a "body contains" filter option.
If these images are base64 attachments try filtering for body contains R0lGOD this is the first few letters of the standard gif header "GIF89a" encoded as base64. Make the filter case sensitive to avoid false matches.

Mel,
That works OK, no more gifs !
Just out of interest where do you find the gif header you describe ?
Cannot see this info if I just look at the email header - presumably you are looking somewhere else

The file header is the first few bytes of the actual file attached to the email it is used to identify the file type (for instance windows executables usually start "MZ" and as you know an image viewer will expect a gif image to start "GIF89a")

If you use outlook express select a message with attachment, right click & select properties -> details -> message source (there may be an option in yahoo to see the original message - there is in Gmail)

Here's part of a message I just sent to myself

The attachment headers (shown in red) are added by the mail client, unfortunately these can't be trusted if it originated from a spammer.

The text in blue is the start of the attached file, base 64 encoding uses four (7 bit) characters to represent three bytes of actual data so "GIF" becomes "R0lG".

Do bear in mind that some legitimate emails may contain gif attachments. I would be inclined to move them to a spam folder and glance through it occasionally before deleting.

Some years ago I tried Incredimail and I have never looked back as far as email is concerned. Within the program you have the facility to 'block' and 'bounce' emails. I find it works very well. There is no messing with having to type in any words or phrases so that these are eliminated, all you do is to select the email(s) and click on 'block' The program has many other things which make it a cut above the others.

One simple option, in webmail highlight the emails which are spam and click the spam button, the email addresses will then be blocked from reaching you again and I also believe passed onto Yahoo for dealing with for reporting to the approiate isps and such like

Otherwise, I know it may be a little expensive, if you use Yahoo with your email client, buy Norton Antispam after a little training this programme can be very effective for filtering spam into a seperate folder, which you can then delete or report to the approiate isps using spamcop (http://www.spamcop.net) or directly yourself.
