DSL - 5 seconds on, 15 seconds off cycle ??

I've recently signed up with Tiscali - OK, titter ye not !

Since my modem kit arrived 12/9/6, I haven't yet managed to connect to their system at all, as the modem can't synchronise. I've also tried a new modem router and have the same problem.

Needless to say, I've spoken to Tiscali - you won't be surprised to hear without any action.

The modem (SpeedTouch 330) diagnostic shows DSL active for 5 seconds (exactly), followed by 15 seconds inactive, this repeats indefinitely.

The line is a BT one and they have confirmed that it has been ADSL activated and that I should be able to get a connections speed of around 3.5 Mbaud.

Any ideas anybody - ALL suggestions gratefully received.

You need to go on their Broadband forum to sort it out,as the Indian call centre is useless,I was without a connection for 3 weeks and eventually was able to cancel my contract after many expensive phone calls as I couldn't even get on the forum!

I suggest you cancel now,I think you have about 28 days before you become bound by the contract for 12 months.

In short you couldn't have picked a worse ISP,get out while you have a chance.I am now with BT,yes a bit more expensive but at least it's reliable, remember, the cheapest is not always the best!!

Make sure you have filters on all telephone equipment including any Sky Boxes, Burglar alarm dialers, and bells you might have connected.

If you have a standard BT master socket with a removable lower half front panel, try connecting with your router plugged directly into the BT test socket behind the lower panel (removing it should disconnect any hard-wired internal extensions if they have been connected properly - burglar alarms may not be)

Also try the bt_test@startup_domain test login (password doesn't matter), unfortunately this may not work because you are with Tiscali so there is a good chance you are not on a IPStream based connection. Check your router's settings are correct:- see the trouble shooting guide here http://www.adslguide.org.uk/qanda.asp?faq=troubleshooting

Also try Tiscali's test login (this should work on Tiscali datastream, I don't know if it works on Tiscali LLU)

Username: testing@dslconnect.co.uk
Password: testing

(if the tiscali one connects you should be able to open http://speedcheck.ispconnect.co.uk in your browser)

Won't work !

I'm afraid that nothing suggested will work.

All I have connected is :- BT test socket - microfilters - one output to a single phone - the other to Speedtouch 330 modem - computer.

I can't connect to ANYTHING, as I have a DSL signal which is only present for 5 seconds at a time.

This being so, I can't run any of the disgnostics.

What I really want to know is, what is the significance of the 5 seconds on / 15 seconds off DSL signal cycle. I suspect that Tiscali have cobbled-up the connection of their equipment. Unfortunately, I can't get them to check the damn thing.

Unfortunately you have chosed the worst ISP in the world. The sad truth is you probably will NEVER get it working. Suggest you cancel immediately and then chose a better ISP. Look at the forums and the ones that consistently get good reviews.

Personally I would recommend BT Business Broadband, £19.99 a month for 10GB, ADSL max. They are not the cheapest, but they do know what they are doing.

Thats 19.99 plus VAT, and after 3 months goes up to 21.99 +VAT, or nearly £26 with VAT.

Plus the £49 (presumably also plus VAT) for the router.

I know you said they aren't cheap, but for a 10Gb allowance that strikes me as pretty expensive!

I agree entirely with you, they are not that cheap. But I need a reliable, fault responsive stable ISP that keeps you informed of progress on any faults, and think its value for money. I made the mistake once before with an ISP of knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing, and wont be doing that again.

I have all of that with Eclipse and it costs me £12 less than you pay.

It would seem they do know what they are doing.... getting rich off of you!

I would take your own advice and

Rare you'll see BT in the 'good reviews' category....

Greetings Phil

This sounds very similar to my recent problem after upgrading to Orange 8meg Service. I was prevously on a 1Meg fixed speed service and all worked perfectly.

Since they upgraded the service today, i've had nothing but a cycle of connection/disconnection. about 10 seconds connected-drop sync- and then wait for the router timeout to connect and log on again.

It wouldn't be so bad but I have to battle with the Infamous Orange Indian call Centres who lie to you and deceive you because they can't be bothered to go further than their idiot sheet. Nightmare!!!

Good luck in getting it fixed.
