Dual monitor output

Just for anyone upgrading to Windows 8...

Dual monitor displays don't actually work on Windows 8. At least not these ones.

I let it update the drivers to the correct ones and rebooted it twice. It shows the correct drivers for the card.

It does show the desktop background on the second monitor and all the options are available including "Extend these displays" so it all looks like it ought to work. If you click "Identify" it draws a "1" on one and a "2" on the other. It's clearly recognising them as two distinct displays.

Except that when you move the mouse to the far right of monitor 1 it does disappear but it never does reappear on monitor 2. You cannot drag a window from the first to the second, the right edge of the first one is the extent of the display.

So the second one sits there looking pretty with a picture of the desktop, but it doesn't actually *do* anything. You can't actually bring anything up on it. A search doesn't turn up very much since I reckon about five people* in the world have upgraded to Windows 8 so far so it's not a commonly reported issue.

Sexy though Windows 8 is, I think I'll put off rebuilding the machine and migrating for a little while longer.

Working nicely with Win 7 though.

* I concede that it might be slightly more than this.

I've done this on Windows 8 with same card on 3 different spec machines.

Don't use the driver settings to manage the displays.

Use Windows 8 second screen. Dead easy.

Charms Bar, Devices, Second Screen, Extend.

If that doesn't work uninstall driver to get rid of settings and reinstall.

It should just work. (Without need to do anything advanced unless you really want to)

You'll laugh at this...

Windows 7 has the monitors as "1" and "2", which is to say that "1" is the one on the left and "2" the one on the right.

Windows 8 has them the other way around.

So you can go from one desktop to the other, but not from left to right, but right to left.

Giggles at own stupidity.

would assume that can be changed, if l was still using a dual monitor setup with win7/XP as l had done in the past would be pretty easy to change it from left to right or right to left.. as its just a matter of ticking which monitor is the primary one (which l assume is possible with win8 (l never checked those settings when l had a play around so l cant be certain).

Pretty Much what you said.
