DVD to MP4

Does anyone know of a good free or cheap program for converting DVDs to MP4 format?

I want to be able to watch movies on my tablet, but obviously need to be able to convert them first.

Thanks

Andy

Assuming you are a windows user....

Handbrake (hxxp://handbrake.fr/) is a simple to use and free program for mp4 conversion, I do no think it will convert copy protected material though such as Commercial DVDs or Blurays, to remove that copy protection you would probably need to use another application.

Something like Anydvd or Anydvd HD from hxxp://www.slysoft.com/en/ that application is not free but a 30 day trial is available. will remove DVD and Bluray copy protections. If you plan on converting and or watching numerous DVDs or Blurays on your computer it is worth every single penny. They also sell Clone DVD Mobile which would also probably do exactly what you want.
The combination of those 2 programs is superb if you are new to video converting, you will not find much better for a simple new user friendly process.

There is also DVDfab again not free nor cheap but again very easy to use. They do a couple of free apps hxxp://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm which work similar to AnyDVD only not as many copy protections which you could use in combination with handbrake mentioned above (IE rip the dvd to your hdd to remove copy protection with one of the free DVDfab apps then use handbrake to convert the files to the mp4 format you want). This method would be a bit more involved but still pretty simple, heres a guide...

Another totally free tool is MeGUI I love this app, though it is not as new user friendly as the above combinations it is alot more versatile once you know what you are doing. Grab that at hxxp://sourceforge.net/projects/megui/

There are more solutions but those are what come to mind immediately in terms of user friendly-ness and a combo of free and non free solutions, if you need more or further help just ask :)

You may also need to know details like the MAX resolution for video files your tablet will handle before encoding and MAX bitrate, if you dont have that info you will just need to experiment (maybe do a trailer or similar from your dvd first rather than the whole film to check it works and save yourself a lot of potential wasted time :). ).

Converting files can take time, so you will also need some patience :)

Best of luck and have fun.

technically as long as the DVD has been decrypted you can watch it straight from the *.Vob files. the only difference being its a larger file and less time converting..

You'll probably find that the biggest problem won't be in decryption but in getting the settings just right for the device that you intend to use, otherwise all sorts of sync, resolution, cropping and aspect ratio problems can surface. My advice is to find a small sample video and convert that until you find something that works best. I tend to convert in the other direction so I don't have any apps to suggest.

cheers guys.

I'm trying out a few different apps now. Most offer a trial version which splashes the company logo across the screen, but at least it gives you an idea of the quality it will produce. I knew about handbrake but I want to rip protected DVDs so I can watch them when I travel.

Try using hxxp://www.videohelp.com/tools/DVD_Decrypter
That will decrypt most dvds to your HDD and is free. Once the disc is ripped to your HDD with the protection removed you can then basically use any app capable of MP4 conversion including handbrake to convert away :)

I seriously recommend getting anydvd though if you are going to be ripping alot of films. It sits in the system tray and does it all on the fly without having to rip to the HDD though allows you to do that also if you wish. I had 3 trial periods of that app which they update often before i decided it would be money well spent.

If you cant afford Anydvd you can try DVD43 which is also free and does a similar job, though it doesnt decrypt all discs (mainly newer protections), read a bit more about that here hxxp://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/ (near the bottom on that page with download link also).

Is another link you can look at for ideas on free and non free software.

Handbrake clonedvd mobile and dvdfab would still be my picks for simple apps they are also quicker at converting than many out there.

Let us all know how you get on :)
