DWR-2101 mifi

Just received the D-Link DWR-2101 mifi today and I am still waiting for the VOXI 5G sim card to arrive. So I decided to try the EE sim card in my iPhone 12 which I thought was not 5G, lo and behold the mifi is picking up 5G.

Below are the speedtest using my phone (bottom 3 with EE sim in the phone and top 2 with sim in mifi and phone connected via wifi). I get the same result when I use the Ookla speedtest app.

The question I have is when I run the Ookla speedtest on the laptop, the results are not close to the iPhone speedtests. The 1st results is the mifi connected to the laptop via an ethernet cable, the 2nd/3rd results are the laptop connected to the mifi via wifi 6, the 4th result is the laptop connected to the ADSL router via wifi and the last 3 results are the laptop tethered to the phone via USB cable.

I live in Birmingham and am in the B2 post code, I sit by the window and the flat is at the 3rd floor but there are no masts visible outside. I have not tried moving the mifi around yet to test for a better location.

Unfortunately, I am one of those "all the gear, no idea" but I am willing to act as a drone for any of the forum oracles interested in either testing the mifi or the 5G/LTE at my location :D

Seriously though, I am quite serious in finding a solution to replace the LTE phone tethering via USB cable as that constantly reconnects my VPN connection. I am also in the unfortunate area where I have an EO phone line which does not allow fibre broadband hence the ADSL.

That's not a bad device, interesting alternative to Huawei.
Band coverage for LTE/5G is not that great, but seems to be doing a great job with what it has, then again N78 is all you really need for speed. Probably your location is great, too, for radio signal.

If you go to nperf.net on your laptop, or fast.com .. do you get better results?

I have also seen loads of discrepancies between speed test sites themselves, as well as between devices used.
I also get somewhat suspiciously lower speeds on my PC rather than a phone, so I can't believe the phone/wifi is faster than an actual PC connected via gigabit ethernet. The only thing I can conclude is that there is some "optimisation" in how speed sites calculate speeds on mobiles or even different browsers.

One possible issue could be the cable, try with another one. Another issue could be the actual gigabit ethernet port in the mifi, with many devices this is an afterthought and they bundle low quality parts, however even cheap chips should deliver fast speeds.

mixed results with the EE sim (tested @ 11:35/11:37 AM) but almost consistent with the voxi sim (tested after 14:45).

I just got the voxi sim this afternoon and initial testing results is showing lower 5G results on the mobile which was connected to via wifi to the mifi (so far only had the voxi sim in the mifi, later I will try using the voxi sim in the mobile) compared to the EE LTE (11:37 test which had the mobile connected via wifi and 14:57/15:00 test EE sim in the mobile).

Weirdly enough the laptop testing showed better results for voxi compared to EE.
