EAP-SIM Wi-Fi on the London Underground

Scancom Three SIM cannot be used to authorize the `THREE_WIFI`.
Lyca cannot be used to authorize the `EE WiFi-Auto`.

Sigh... It is good to keep a PAYG SIM from Vodafone/Three in your eSIM storage in case.

I am confused what you are trying to say here.
Kindly elucidate for our knowledge.
Thanks

Sure.

So till the middle of 2024, some platforms of the London underground do not have cellular coverage, for instance, Victoria Line. To save capital expenditure, base providers (Three/Vodafone/EE) deployed Wi-Fi hotspots using the EAP-SIM authentication method. Unfortunately, MVNO customers except Voxi (Vodafone) cannot pass the authentication using their SIMs. Three business SIMs seem not working either, according to my experience.

I'd say its the other way round.

The main providers will always provide a better overall experience (not just access to WIFI) and hence price difference otherwise everyone would migrate.

Therefore my view is to keep a main provider number on a minimal package and then use a MVNO as the main data SIM (Dual SIM physical or eSIM). I happen to use EE and that has proven very handy hopping onto BT/EE routers inside buildings.

That is why possibly the entry level SIM prices have risen for the main providers to discourage dual SIM.

Agreed!

It works for me. Just keep spamming one of them (I use EE WiFi Auto) and after 2 minutes of reconnecting, it'll hook on. Usually you only need to spam it one time and then it'll hook on automatically every time you go to the station. I'm on Android so it may be a bit different on iOS.

It's not a pretty solution but it works. At least I can keep using 2 MVNOs without needing an expensive MNO SIM.

I've got mine direct from Three (£5 data only unlimited) and it works fine. Maybe it's a Scancom thing.

This used to work for me but doesn't want to anymore. Was sitting on a platform for almost 10 mins the other day and could never get on (was trying Lebara SIM with VodafoneWifi mainly, but also tried the Three and EE SSIDs).

Always used to work on Lebara up until recently so something seems to have changed.

I think a credit-less Three SIM should let you on...

@datahoarder I can use THREE_WIFI with my Scancom data SIM. Tested today:

Lebara stopped working... might have to change my dual SIM setup again 😆

I've spammed EE WiFi Auto a few times @RajSandhu2k, but can't get it to connect.

Some platforms are more picky than others. Whitechapel will not connect for a good 5 minutes while Paddington will hook on instantly. The same applies with other lines (e.g. District) where it connects instantly as well.

The biggest stinger is that Whitechapel platform has 4G on Vodafone but not on O2 for some reason. Must be a misconfiguration on Boldyn's end. Combine that with the unreliable WiFi and it's horrible. Oh, and it's made even worse having to commute to East London every day 🙄🙄😂😂

I would enable reconnect for all networks - WiFi Extra (O2), EE WiFi Auto, Vodafone WiFi and Three WiFi. This way it'll spam between each one automatically until it eventually lets you onto one of them.

Usually it alternates between all of them and then tries to reconnect again and again. This increases the likelihood that it hooks onto one of them. They're all basically the same system so the attempt count will rack up even faster this way.

This whole thing is witchcraft for someone like me who's not fortunate enough to main a MNO SIM.
