Earthquake

Tonight we had an earthquake that seemed to shake everything in the house, even doors rattled that were closed and windows. the floor was shaking. ornaments moving.

I know some friends in Ashton-Under-Lyne felt it, my daughter in Bolton plus her boyfriend in Altrincham.

Where else did people feel the tremours it was supposed to be under Manchester.

I didn't realise what it was at first - I was mentally cussing my neighbours and wondering what the heck they were up to!

Not as strong here in London as what I've heard reports of further north, just the monitor shaking, the chair wobbling and the floor bouncing a bit, but definitely stronger than the Melton Mowbray one some years back (and that's a fair bit closer to me than Maket Rasen, the current BBC estimate of the epicentre) which gave my sister in Grantham a bit of a fright.

My computer was wobbling about a bit at 12:57, not too good for the old hard disk. This earthquake wasn't as bad as the last two (UK) I've experienced though. :)

Didn't feel anything here but then I could sleep through a Nuclear blast if it happened, comes from living on a busy mainstreet :) . My cat was up early and looking alert this morning though, but I think that had more to do with the wagtails on the roof outside.. yum.

Some of my colleagues felt it, but I slept right through. Mind you, I live near NW London, so it's wouoldn't have been that strong.

I have a history of sleeping through stuff like this - I live less than 20 miles from the oil refinery in that exploded a year or three ago, in Hemel Hempstead. My partner and our son both woke - I knew nothing about it until family started calling the next day to check we were ok.

When the wife said: "Did you feel the earth move?" I assumed it was a compliment.

(Well someone had to say it!)

I am about 30 miles from the epicentre. I was at my computer, it started like a train approaching, then the building started shaking violently, the lights dimmed, the sound got louder, sort of like thunder.

The scariest moment of my life, I don't want to experience that again.

It is difficult to describe the noise and earth movement, I honestly thought that the building was about to collapse.

I thought it was my dad snoring till I heard it on the car radio coming in to work.

-snip-

I felt it in Derbyshire in fact my house is built on ground that used to be a mining site and I thought it was a mine collapsing - the house shook so badly!

My family all live in Bolton and some heard it some didnt and my wifes family are in Glasgow and swear they heard it as well but I'm not convinced :-)

Well, I was actually in bed asleep at the time. I live in the Midlands and it was stong enough to wake me up. Strangely enough, once I realised that the bed was really jigging about and I wansn't having some sort of siezure, I knew what it was. I thought "That's a strong one" and went back to sleep.

Collegues at work had slightly more interesting experiences. One had her bed move away from the wall by about a foot, which was interesting for her, as well as she having trouble to shut the bedroom door now.

Another collegue was sitting reading on the sofa at home and she said it was as if someone had grabbed the other end of the sofa and was jigging it up and down. Her first thought was "ghost" and the second thought was that the cats were doing it. If she has cats that might be capable of shifting a sofa, I sure aint visitng her house in a hurry.

every time something like this has happened ppl close to me have mentioned something happening but lve never felt a thing :p

in fact this is first lve heard of anything about an eathquake

I bet that was an interesting moment!

2 megaquakes in Indonesia in the same week and someone in Derbyshire gets a thrill for a couple of seconds and that was an interesting moment?

No offence and all that but let's get real here.:hrmph:

Yes, but in journalistic terms the Indonesian quake was "Dog bites man !" whereas the UK quake was "Man bites dog !". :hrmph:

No need to turn this around we do know other countries have more severe earthquakes BUT this was about what we felt and trying to see just how many parts of the UK felt the earthquake.
We do know we are lucky but as seen recently our earthquakes are getting more often and stronger..

If I lived in Indonesia then I would have been asking about there...

Lets not pick on members posts just try to be constructive you didn't feel it lucky you all you need to say is yes or no.

Some people have never been in an earthquake so it is something that can terrify them..

couldnt help but quote this because its the best point made in this thread

True, people in certain parts of the world are quite used to 'quakes, however we are not in the UK.

If anybody had have been sitting where I was the other night, they would not have been making such petty remarks, I can tell you now, I was bloody terrified.

Just cos other people have had worse quakes doesn't mean that the one we had can't shake people up a bit.

Using that logic, my friend shouldn't be concerned about the relatively minor car accident his wife and children were involved in because a few miles away someone else had a much worse accident with more serious injuries. It just doesn't work like that.
