Eclipse Sent My Account To Debt Collectors

I too had more than my fair share of trouble when I tried to leave Eclipse Internet having been a customer for over 8 years!
Like others I had to write a letter and obtain a MAC code. However, soon after I left I received a bill for just under £99. I queried this bill several times and never received a full and satisfactory answer.
I understood, sort of, that £50 was due but I could not for the life of me figure where the rest of the charges came from?
In the middle of my discussions, emails and phone calls to Eclipse I received a letter from a debt collection agency! No warning no discussion nothing; just a threatening letter out of the blue demanding full payment within 10 days etc. etc.
I paid the bill in full since I did not want a bad credit rating over such an amount.
I must say I am totally disgusted with Eclipse. Their service was average at best but did begin to go downhill for the last few years.
I moved over to Sky broadband (not a decision I took easily I can tell you) to whom I pay less than half of what I was paying Eclipse and have unlimited downloads. With Eclipse there was a cape of 50 gigs a month (this was actually more than enough for me but unlimited is better!)
I would not recommend anyone to use Eclipse. As other reviewers have stated. They are average to good at best but seem to slip in unknown charges when you leave. And for goodness sake don’t bother to query anything otherwise the bill is swiftly sent off to a debt collection agency. Shocking.

It's difficult to answer this without knowing more about your package / situation and I'm also none the wiser after looking at the ISPs T&C's documentation.

If you understood that £50 was due, is that for an early contract exit or did you need the line to be ceased for some reason (Eclipse is largely BT based and thus most MAC based migrations should be possible without needing to cease the line)? They might also have some form of exit fee to cover the cost of free router offers too but I couldn't see much via their legal doc's, although I do recall that there was a £25 exit charge back in 2011.

In any case the ISP, just like all businesses, has a legal responsibility to explain what the charges are for. If they cannot do so then it's time to begin an official complaint and follow the ordered procedure that we explain in more detail here:

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/new/complain/complain.shtml

If after 8 weeks you still haven't got an answer then you can request a Deadlock letter and threaten to take it to an ADR, which will cost the ISP money to handle. At that point they might become more responsive.

PS - You did the right thing by paying first. If in doubt, unless it's a very serious matter, then pay first and chase them through the proper channels for compensation later.
