EE 100Mbit Limit - Does it apply to 2022 Essentials contract?

I'm on a fairly rural mast where EE seems to work best. Signal is reported as strong 20Mhz + 20Mhz B3 / B3 4G+. The odd thing is speed varies between about 100Mbit and 225Mbit according to speedtest.net.

My plan is 5G unlimited with "Essentials" one from 2022. Do speed limits apply to this plan. I tried checking the PDFs from EE around that period and I cannot see mention of these limits. Are 4/5G plans just getting more expensive and worse with EE?

In my experience there is no 100mbit cap, instead it seems to set you as low priority when there is congestion.

I used to be on a "100Mbit cap" Essentials Unlimited SIMO deal in early/mid 2023 - I was regularly and consistently breaking this speed cap, saw up to 650Mbit in my city. There was a glitch at the time where I was able to get a "BT broadband discount" (I'm not with BT for broadband), which I thought might've affected and overrided the speed cap, tho now I'm not so sure - I've now seen a few people mention being on a "100Mbit cap" plan, and not being capped, maybe it is a priority case where it's only applied during congestion, as @WKDRED said above?

When I changed it to the absolute cheapest thing to get out of it cheaper (EE signal was a bit eh at home around that time), a 10Mbit No Frills plan, that speed cap was immediately applied, so maybe the only speed cap that is enforced all the time is No Frills? /shrug

There is another differential on essential compared to the best packages now, if I understand EE's website correctly then the new 5G SA stuff isnt available on essentials and below.

baa I was curious about the PAYG cap, thanks for sharing your feedback on it. :)

I have a 100Mb capped plan. In reality it's more like a 120Mb cap but that very much is a hard cap as I can swap over to my CMLink SIM which is uncapped and get in the region of 3x that speed with the same device and location.

A couple of years ago, they used to sell these essential plans but very rarely actually put a speed cap on the account. These days though it seems to be actively enforced with newer contracts like the one I currently have with them taken out around Easter this year.

That is interesting, mine isnt capped at 120mbit, although round here it is very hard to find a fast EE location as most of the areas are not performing great. I have found the further away from the city centre I go the faster EE gets, but where I live it is definitely the slowest EE area I have found. It has the smallest cell out of all the city masts.

The test I did was to compare to 1p mobile, and a family member's EE sim (which isnt essentials). In all the tests 1p mobile pretty much matches the premium EE sim. In many areas my essentials will match both sims (even over 120mbit). But during peak hours my essentials is slower in some areas, but in other areas matches them.

I will be doing some more testing on Friday as will be going around the city for few things and will do speedtests as we move around and stop at places.

Also what will be interesting on Friday is now EE have formally enabled 5G SA in my city, so will be interesting if anything changes with that.

Just reread your post, I think that might explain why I am uncapped (but still not the same as I do appear to be traffic shaped), because the essentials contract was first agreed if I remember right about 17-18 months ago, its not a new one, the deal is so good I kept it, it seems EE retention deals have no expiry date.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

If @WKDRED is right then maybe I should consider a newer more expensive contract but this seems horribly murky.

It seems 20+20Mhz 4G+ theoretical max is 300Mbit so I'm guessing 225Mbit is about the max possible in reality. My other Three sim is 15Mhz + 5Mhz connection and that maxes out around 120Mbit.
