EE 4G extremely unstable download speeds recently

Hi,

I've been with EE 4G now for about 4 years now due to only having copper cable in my area (I live in a very rural area). I went with EE as for some reason they have a 4G tower near my house which has always provided me with 70mbps download and 35 upload which is great, have been able to do everything I've needed.

However, around 3-4 weeks ago they did something in my area apparently and since then my speeds have been abysmal and very unstable. I would do a speed test and it will jump straight up to 70mbps and then over the span of 5 seconds it will go down to 2mbps or less and bounce around that and every now and then drop out, however upload speeds is staying at a stable 35mbps.

I've called EE about 20-30 times now and they are convinced it's the 4G External Antenna they fitted to the outside of my house about 3 years ago has gone wrong, but I really don't think it is that. They are sending out an engineer to my house to look at the antenna wednesday next week but it's just too far away, the internet is stopping me from being able to work properly, etc.

So I was wondering what could be causing this to happen or if there is anything I can try doing?

Have you tried testing the speeds on a different device? Getting closer to the mast if you have to.

Or using the same device outside without the external antenna.

I've started using EE 4G for my home broadband a couple of weeks ago and have also been noticing this behaviour. The download speed fluctuates massively between 170 to 90 to 2mbps over the span of seconds and then other times with the signal occasionally dropping for about 10 seconds.

I've also had the same behavior you described with the uploads as they tend to sit between 60-70mbps constantly.

I don't have anyother devices on EE annoyingly and my phones are locked to O2.

So it is just my 4G Router which I can't get any closer to the mast.

It's happened since they done some maintence about a month ago in the area. They have an engineer coming wednesday to possibly fit a new antenna but I won't be holding my breath that it will fix it as I believe it is the mast causing the issues

How old are your phones? It's been a couple of years since operators were banned from locking devices.

You should be able to request the unlock code for free here:

But could you get it outside and as high up as possible on the side of the house closest to the mast?
It is as high as it possibly can be and it is already on the side of the house that the mast is on.

I've discovered that I am also getting really high and unstable download and upload latency. EE still think it is my external antenna that has gone wrong, could it be?

Is it possible to obtain the cellular signal parameters (from the router management page) if the external antenna is suspected?

Does the issue remain after each reboot and can the connected Cell ID be recorded to see if multiple towers might be involved?

Sorry but I have no idea how to do any of that, how do I get that information?
