EE 4G Speed tailing off

Hi. Signed up to EE4G April 2022 and for a long time was getting mostly 40/50 mbps with it rarely dropping below 30. In recent months low 20s at best and often 7/10. No changes to installation in that time. I've used a tp-link Archer MR400 (AC1200) 4G router (Cat 4) from the outset connected via ethernet cable to Netgear Orbi Mesh set-up. I'm wondering if changing to a Cat 6 router (Archer MR600 perhaps) would improve matters in my very rural area near Loch Ness. Any thoughts? I could go to Starlink but this is overkill for my needs (consistent minimum of say 30mbps).

If you are using cat4, I'd recommend a minimum of cat12 as an upgrade, cat20 if you can afford a zyxel nr5103e.
Excuse me, the Zyxel NR5103E is CAT 22, how very dare you demote it. 😊
Oh and it's currently £140 at CEX Zendog, if that's within your budget. :)

Don't... I keep seeing it touted about. I'm tempted again now I've got N28 in the area but my antenna doesn't really like 700Mhz

Yeah the internal antennas would never see it from within my box. And my parabolic now that I've changed it doesn't do N28 all too well but I do wonder if it's worth trying - I'd love to test at least.

I can sometimes see N28 on my cell list but the RM500Q modem can't aggregate N28 NSA, only SA.

Thanks meritez. I'm going to try the Zyxel NR5101 (Cat 20 I think) as I can get this from Amazon which makes it very easy to return if it doesn't make a good enough difference. If that doesn't work I'll have to bite the bullet and go for Starlink.

Hi Zendog, yes that's the great thing about Amazon, try and return if no good.

Let us know how you get on when you get it, best of luck. (y)

Hi The Wee Bear.

Reporting back as requested: The good news is the speed roughly doubled with the Zyxel router, got back to circa 55! The bad news is that the speed still drops significantly in evenings, often barely 20. My non-expert assessment (happy to be corrected) is that carrier aggregation has boosted the speed, but a lack of capacity from EE is still scuppering things at peak times. I believe that adding an external antenna would do little to address the issue, so unless I've missed something it's off to Starlink for me.

Aw that's good and bad news Zendog, yeah I doubt an external would change anything.

Thanks for your update. Hope you have better luck with looking upwards if you go down that route. :)
