EE (5G) abroad

I find myself dragged by the wife in various places again, so here are some speed tests from around here, roaming on EE.
Device is xiaomi mi 5t lite 5g.

Casa Batllo, Barcelona
(rooftop, higher upload, possibly some LOS)
(building entrance, higher download - prolly better reflections, beam forming)

La Rambla, Barcelona (off hotel balcony).
I'm impressed with Orange's 5G coverage of Barcelona so far, much better than EE in London.
Granted, Barcelona is all blocks and tall buildings, planning permission is probably just a formality.

Any idea on Cell bandwidths is use there
Nsg didn't want to start on your deGoogled phone, but netmonster briefly showed 20+20(+20? )+10 MHz.. God knows how accurate it was, but yeah, fast.

Updates from Genova (harbour).
Excellent 5G, shitty 4G (did some tests with 5G disabled). The coffee is amazing though.

It'd be great if nperf showed the 5g bw..

Marseille.
I saw 700-800 Mbps downloads in the centre, impressive, but expected in the home country of Orange.
Shame can't tell the 5G bw, but it doesn't feel like 100Mhz anyway.

The whole city is blanketed in very good 5G, don't think I ever saw downloads lower than 300 Mbps. Usually in the 400-500 range.

Like Genova and Barcelona, Marseille is mostly blocks of flats, tall buildings, as such the antennas are well out of sight, but the signal is great.

Nice speed. Pretty big ping though. I've seen as little as 11ms here on three 5G. Irelands seems to be doing pretty well on broadband in general though.
The ~30ms ping is reasonable provided I was on the move on a local bus at the particular instant of testing. ;)
Frankly 11ms for Three's 5G (assuming you're talking Three UK not Three Ireland) only applies to the South East England, other region you are likely to see 30-40ms as the minimum. It's poor backhaul optimisation for Three UK sadly.

Yes ROI+NI is doing generally better than GB in terms of coverage and speed. I had a Smarty sim (so 3UK effectively) with me on the trip, didn't do any proper speedtest (12GB roaming allowance sucks) but I hardly found any blackspots or congestion (stuff not loading) in big city centres and suburbs. Same applies for Vodafone so both are really doing a good job there!

Weird, I can't even get on 3 IRE - 4G network when roaming in RoI with Smarty SIM, it will ONLY register and connect on the 3G network. I am starting to come to the conclusion that there is some kind of device limiting going on in border areas. Not to mention that my local mast is broadcasting that it is "3 ITA"

I remembered my Smarty sim did get 4G+ in ROI, seems not 5G though.

Venezia & Jesolo..

I did get 5G briefly, an OK 200/40 from TIM.
After that EE insisted to roam on Vodafone and you'll be happy to know VF sucks as bad at 5G abroad as it does at home.. Saw none of it.

Also a surprise picture of a couple of LHGs.

Have you tried speedtests to local servers?

In Sofia, Bulgaria these days.

There's 5G, but speeds are very 4G. On the bright side they're pretty consistent 100/50 dl/ul Mbps throughout the city.

EE's roaming partner here is Yettel (ex-Telenor I believe).

Doesn't Bulgaria have really fast cheap fibre lines too? I was reading about how they set up their early ISPs over there. Fascinating stuff. I'd consider 100mbit+ on a phone very good, I rarely need more.

Yeah, asked a local and apparently this was a thing. Most of the small isp got gobbled up by the big ones though and some consolidation has occurred since. Pretty much like in my motherland North of the Danube. :)

In Munchen this time, no 5G for some reason, but heck of 4G.. On top O2 of all things, how do you like that.. 😁
Lte 3CA from hotel room, combination of B1+7, 20+20+20 MHz. Mast has got to be very near.
