EE 5g band n1 ?!?

Hi,

Lurking for a while. Recently I noticed my phone registering 5g NSA in my local area (closest town being Corbridge), so decided to buy a CPE PRO 2.

On my phone the speeds were never brilliant for 5g NSA but certainly usable, 50-100mps regardless of the speed tester I used; getting 150+ down via 4G w/carrier aggregation.

On connecting LTE monitor, 5g shows band n1 ?!

Going to diagnostics in LTE monitor, and hitting signal gives me:

Is this normal of EE to install 5G NSA like this? 15mhz 2100mhz 5g?

My only guess is EE are awaiting backhaul from OpenReach of similar, so in an attempt to get 5g going if throttled they've configured it as such.... but who really knows?

PS: Smarty SIM really doesn't want to play ball with CPE PRO2, but works fine in B818 (??!!)... I suspect Three also have NSA around here.

Anyone seen such an example before?

I would have a word with the developer of LTE H Monitor and see if its a bug in LTE H Monitor. 5G is relatively new and as he is based in France its understandable he is not as clued up on 5G in the UK as he is for the French side. I find him very approachable and ready to help. In the meantime turn on the logging feature and collect some start up data for LTE Monitor.

Certainly is possible that EE are beginning an n1 rollout (possibly with DSS) alongside their new n28 rollout. n78 can be difficult to roll out with any real pace and n1 would be a good middleground for semi-rural masts where major capacity isn't required (and gets a nice shiny 5G indicator on compatible phones).

Possible, but I can attest to already having easily 100+ on 4g++ available, typically 150+ down so I'm a little confused why they'd do that... ! Maybe other sectors arent so good, who knows.

In this case, rather than being purely a capacity add (like 40Mhz n78), it sounds like it is a case of upping 5G coverage percentage and also preparing for 5G SA.

I think you're right, this might be an incremental upgrade to tick some 5g boxes off. No bother, FTTP is likely to be here within 6-9m anyway

Expect so, 2022 (that could be Jan 1st) BT are moving 3G over to 4/5G. They may just 5G it, given B3 1800 4G coverage. 2G is closing in 2025.

Three U.K. have a tiny percentage of 3G users/data. EE probably has a lot more, but it hasn’t the 100Mhz 5G spectrum Three has so it’s got to work with it’s spaghetti junction spectrum to boost 5G.

Tested 5g over weekend here and there, barely get 35mbps down. Here's hoping they refine it over the coming months, as it doesn't make much sense (and is far inferior to 3x-4x CA 4g)

35mbit down on EE 5G? Something seriously wrong there. I might expect that from Vodafone, outside of a city .. but not EE.

What exactly have you been testing? N1 DSS?

The 15Mhz of bandwidth only has a theoretical capacity of ~170Mbps if fully deployed to 5G, but given its working in DSS, you loose ~15% capacity on both 4G and 5G just by implementing DSS. And then the 4G/5G ratio will be being balanced as well - more than likely the requirements on 4G will be greater than 5G, so 35Mbps sounds about right.

What would be interesting is seeing the speeds for 4G only 2100Mhz (B1)

Well in good news, EE have appeared to drop the 4g 2100mhz band on the 5g serving cell, and seemingly dedicated it entirely to 5g (i can only pick up 4g 2100mhz from another mast).

I'm now seeing via LTEMonitor 200mbps+ down and 20mbps+ up via 5g NSA after a bit of tweaking of the router's direction, which is approximately what I was getting with 3x carrier aggregation via 4G (2x B3 bands + 1x B1 bands) previously.
