EE roaming in Germany defaults to EDGE (was EE getting only or mostly 4G where it was 5G before)

Could it be relate to EE rolling out 5G SA only to premium subscribers?
Or did they start labelling properly 5G frequencies rather just the protocol?
Don't want yet to reset all the network settings just to see if it helps.

Ok sorry my bad. During summer travels I was trying to fix some roaming EDGE issues in Germany by manually setting to 4G and forgot.. Getting older. Apologies.

I've noticed a recurring issue with EE's roaming in Germany. For some reason, the network defaults to Vodafone, but it only connects to EDGE(2.75G), which doesn't really provide usable internet. When I manually switch to O2 DE, everything works fine. Switching to 4G did not help.

I've seen others mention this issue online as well, so it seems like a common problem. I reported it to EE customer service, but since it's still happening regularly, maybe they should either make O2 the preferred network or get Vodafone to provide proper connectivity.

I don't think EE does default to VF, might just have been O2 was weaker when your phone was searching?

Either way it's not great to only have a single 4/5G partner in Germany.

Getting stuck on 2G/3G, or no data, seems to be a common issue when roaming with some networks, happens to me with EE sometimes but also had it on the others in some countries.

EE should have Vodafone DE 5G but seems like getting stuck on 2G is common.

Normally if you leave it for about 5-10 mins it'll go up to 4G/5G but sometimes you have to wait longer. Or you have to mess around with it (cycling flight mode, rebooting, reselecting the network etc) or like in your case just select a different network where the roaming's been configured properly.

No idea what causes it tbh, but it's clearly fixable if they configure it properly.

Thanks. Perhaps it's an old limitation of the roaming architecture, preventing a switch to the preferred network and instead staying connected to the first available barebones network. However, I haven't experienced anything like this in other countries. I've crossed borders at multiple points for the last few years on the opposite side of the country, and the issue is always the same. I am not discounting this as coincidence being always nearer Vodafone mast of course. This is particularly frustrating when zigzagging in and out of the country around mountains, requiring me to manually select a network each time.

I am surprised premium brand like EE is so tight on roaming agreements

Yep it really sucks in some countries, always going for the cheap networks. All our networks do that to an extent but EE is supposed to be premium... Since BT took over the roaming's gone downhill :(

And they should have a pretty decent agreement with DT thanks to being a partner of this https://www.freemove.com/connectivity-everywhere/ and also with DT owning 12% of BT.

You'd think but EE roaming didn't offer roaming on Telekom for a period at all (last year/earlier this year, I think?) - and still might not?

In Spain this year my Talk Home SIM (which should be EE native partners) would keep automatically selecting Orange ES which would not go above 3G.

Movistar ES offered 5G and Yoigo offered 4G both immediately. One of the few times I have had to specifically manually select.

Well Talk Home SIM is a budget brand which migh be relatively accceptable while EE is a premium brand so would expect to have a smooth ride wherever I go as long as I pay. Isn't thats the idea of Premium Brand?

I couldn't use Telekom either last year or this year. I thought it was odd that it wanted to use o2-de all the time given DT's shareholding in BT and the fact that O2 is of course a competitor.

I didn't notice any major performance issues though, aside from the lack of VoLTE roaming. I had bigger problems in the Netherlands where it wanted to use Vodafone when KPN was superior (which was available, just had to select manually)
