EE Unlimited Data sim

Hi Steve, just to add my experience for info. Like The Wee Bear I have also purchased a prepaid unlimited EE sim via Amazon (Seller is Scancom). These services are not functioning on my home network:

  • WiFi Calling / Whatsapp voicecalls
  • Smart TV streaming services (Netflix, Apple TV, Youtube).
  • WiFi security cameras
  • Spotify streaming via Chromecast audio
My laptop and iPhone connects to the internet and gets up to 100Mb down (might be capped at 100Mb?) and can stream all services, just the WiFi calling / Whatsapp that isn't working. My wife can't connect to her company's servers via VPN either.

I am using a Huawei B535-333 and am not getting an external IPv4 address, only IPv6. I have even tried some of the excellent suggestions from @EssexBoy on the EE forum (including changing APN to force IPv4 but no joy as won't connect).

Pop an EE PAYG or Three sim in, boom. No problems and everything works. So the preloaded sim from Scancom is perhaps not able to use IPv4 (I think EE might have switched it off in favour of IPv6 on in 2018, maybe just on data only sims but this is only a guess). Or, as @The Wee Bear says it might be CGNAT issues. I have tried a DDNS via the router but couldn't get that to work and my router only supports slower VPN protocols which may solve the issue.
Surprised setting to IPv4-only didn't work for you, does your router support 464XLAT? This is what EE uses for their IPv6 implementation which effectively routes IPv4 traffic by embedding the address within an IPv6 prefix which is then routed over the IPv4 internet by EE.

Yes I was hoping forcing IPv4 would work, but the connection is refused. I have also seen suggestions that changing APN settings to tmobile but no joy there either. I do not know if my router supports 464XLAT, quick google search and none the wiser. Something I will look into further though! Although I do receive an external IPv4 when using a PAYG EE sim if that is any indication!

@Bakerbear my scancom EE SIM works fine in:
Unicom vn007+/ZLT x21
Mikrotik Chateau 5G
Mikrotik Chateau LTE12
Mikrotik LTAP mini
Mikrotik LHG LTE
ZTE MF286D

I had to set the APN to ipv4 only from auto.
WiFi calling works
Smart cameras work
Echo and Google speakers work
VPN works
VoIP registration works
Gaming works
Streaming works

I'm honestly of the opinion that the Huawei b535 you both own is a pile of 💩

It is, terrible UI and very basic. Disconnects from admin page frequently.

This is my first foray into mobile home broadband and I have learnt a lot in the past two weeks. So either it is the router or the sim. I am tempted to try another router, perhaps even a Microtik as long as it can use an external antenna. Any suggestions for posts to read that might help me make up my mind? For example, I have no idea which category router to go for or if that even really matters (mast dependent?) I think mine is currently a CAT7.

The fact that you have forced it to IPv4 and it still connects is giving me some hope.

ZTE mf286d cat12 £42 cex

They do sell an unlocked version for £45, but after buying three of them I can confirm they're not locked to Three at all.

There's a conversion thread on here to fully unbrand the router and it's as capable as a Chateau LTE12 for speed and carrier aggregation, add in bridge mode and you can have a decent wireless mesh behind it if needed or a router that can do VPN, or a pihole or an adguard or.

Thank you, I will give that a go and report back!

My experience:
Scancom EE sim. Huawei CPE Pro 2 router.

Issue: All devices are connected to the network, but some(TV, robo vacuum, etc..) don't have internet. Wifi calling didn't work on any phone in the house.
Solution: Changed auto to IPV4 in the router.

Issue: After some days of usage some websites (superdry, apple, etc..) randomly stopped working. VPN also didn't work.
Solution 1: Ask your sim card issuer (Scancom for me) to lift the content lock. Or
Solution 2: Change dns server address.
These two solutions are not mutually exclusive. I did both.

B535 (may work with other huawei routers)

First login to your router via chrome and follow this guide to set dns to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Now click network settings and Internet connection.

Goto profiles and click the plus

Name it ee and click set to default

Now input these settings, password is secure

Hope this helps :)

Thanks again for the help and suggestions

Glad you managed to resolve @Steve-2019 - seems like a design flaw of the B535 and you’ve found a good workaround with that guide.

I’ve gone ahead and set up a ZTE MF286D and flashed to Nordic 11 (thanks @meritez !). Took a few reboots of the router as was getting no sim/invalid sim messages to begin with but after a few attempts it automatically connected via IPv4 and I’m getting good speeds and connecting to two bands. Lots to tinker with…

Just cancelled an EE contract for 2 reasons, the first that's shown on the Amazon website being "unlimited data but fair usage of 600gb per month" and the second being it was £37 per month now compared to £18 or less on Three for truly unlimited. TBH I don't think their coverage is as good as Three now either!

Whilst I don't disagree with your reasoning and costings (and yes, 600gb FUP is far too low for an UL data Plan), If I was to put my neck on the block and say which Network has the best Coverage and Speed my answer would be EE, closely followed by Vodafone, Three are pretty much and have always been, its either there or its not in terms of 4/5G Coverage, and yes they are catching up and very impressively over the past couple of years, but its still just not there yet.

Agreed 100%. I'm really rooting for Three here, but they are nowhere near EE, however they might have surpassed O2.

Well I can def agree O2 are the least best in my opinion! I've no experience of Vodafone but we also use EE at work and it's good but my experience with Three is usually available wider and certainly a little quicker. Interested to hear about Vodafone as their 5g seems the least developed, certainly in Kent.
