EE WiFi Calling Abroad (Turkey)

Hi all, I’m usually more of a reader than a poster but I thought I’d give it a go (lol).

I’m currently on out in Turkey with both phones on EE (iPhone 14 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S23) and they’ve connected to the Turkcell network. However when I got to my hotel on Monday, I realised that on my S23, I had WiFi Calling from EE which was strange as my iPhone was still showing Turkcell. I tried calling someone and the call rang as normal without the spend cap warning. I did check my VPN (which was set to UK) in case and it is wasn’t on…

Screenshot for comparison from my iPhone. Local Sim VodaTR showing WiFi Calling but my EE sim still showing Turkcell.

Now I’m not aware if WiFi Calling abroad was available from EE as it hasn’t appeared since on iPhone or if I was just being lucky. I’ll keep you posted on that front.

But it’s strange that UK providers don’t offer WiFi Calling abroad (as some abroad providers like PLAY in Poland do… and would save some on roaming costs).

Any ideas what has happened? Or am I just being daft.

It might be that the Wi-Fi IP address happened to make it look like you were in the UK and it connected to their servers.

I do recall reading in their terms and conditions that if Wi-Fi calling was connected from abroad they reserved the right to charge the calls as foreign calls outside of the normal allowance as Wi-Fi calling should not be used from abroad. I can't find that on their website now.

Found a reference to it here: https://care.ee.co.uk/wifi_calling last page, they recommend turning it off to avoid any nasty surprises.

Thank you Phil, appreciate your response. It’s strange as it’s not connecting now so maybe it was a strange glitch? Who knows.

I have checked My EE and I’ve got no extra charges for now but I’m mostly stuck on WiFi or I use the local sim for internet.

Just peaked my interest as other foreign networks offer WiFi calling abroad 🫣

I actually think what’s happening here is that you’re getting WiFi calling from the roaming network and not from EE.

With mobile networks starting to shut down 2G and 3G, it’s likely that international networks have started to cooperate on allowing 4G/5G Calling and WiFi Calling (fairly similar technologies) for roaming customers.

If it was connecting back to EE, even whilst abroad somehow with a VPN to the UK, it would show EE WiFi Call, but because it’s your roaming network, you’re still roaming.

I had this happen with O2 and Vodafone on Luftansa Satellite WiFi the other week the IP showed as Telekom in Germany

Tried to replicate it on WiFi in Germany and Switzerland with no luck
