Eights years away and have a question now please.

I had forgotten all about this website and just discovered it was eight yrs ago since I last posted. Hopefully I will try and make up for it. So, why am I here now?. In a couple of words, talktalk and house move.

I've been with talktalk since the day they shouted "free broadband forever", in fact I have literature going back to those days sent out by TT. They might make interesting reading. But, we are aiming to move house in November and think this might be as good a time as any to change ISP.

Untill last month, I paid line rental 12 months in advance, but let that lapse when the house thing looked likely. I have Fibre Optic at either £5 or £7.50 per month, a boost for anytime calls and receive a paper statement. That's all I want from any new provider.

I did a Sam Knows search and got this

BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
BT Wholesale WBC (21CN)
BT Wholesale SDSL
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
Sky Broadband
It means nothing to me. I've been looking and PlusNet seems fair, BT confusing as it wont state anything about anytime calls. BT are currently at the house. Any views please?

If that's the result you got from SamKnows then it doesn't look as if you can get "fibre" (FTTC) from any ISPs at the new place yet (share the postcode and we can take a closer look), so you can count that one out.

However both TalkTalk and Sky Broadband do have unbundled lines present, so you should be able to get their normal unlimited services at the stated prices. If saving money is most important then it probably comes down to a choice between TT, Plusnet or Sky, although recent (hacking) events make it difficult to pick TalkTalk but you might wish to do that if your experience has been good.

Hi Mark, as for talktalk, they have always been fair with me, they've always given me a "sweetener" when things went wrong. Clearly concerned about the hacking, but presumably they are bending over backwards to ensure nothing happens again, otherwise it could be the end of the road for them. I will pm you my postcode and see if you can make anything of it. Thanks.

FYI - You don't have to take the Sky TV service, you can just take Sky Broadband + Sky Phone Line Rental together without the TV.

Right, I ran a check on that postcode and SOME premises in the area are within reach of an FTTC "fibre broadband" enabled cabinet, but you'd need to do an address search or phone number check via the ISP to see if you're covered.

That is interesting about sky broadband and phone, will read up on it, thanks

PS, I am quite attracted to sky now. I know they have sky where we are going, although they have BT for phone/broadband but this sky thing has really whetted my appetite. Glad I found you after all this time. Will keep you posted and thanks again.

PNs tech support is back below "dire" again right now, I waited nearly an hour before giving up last Wednesday - on an estimated 45 minute wait time.

SKY seem to be improving, but if you have been happy with TT and you can use a payment system which you can easily shut down if they get hacked again, go for it.

(Can you pay by Visa/MasterCard? If so, use a PrePay card to limit your exposure)

Thanks both, will follow up later, had to take to bed, bit unwell

One day later, I have followed through with the link in Kits post and after entering address, it says :-

Exchange name: Weymouth

Status: Accepting orders

Good news. Your serving cabinet is enabled for fibre broadband. Please note, in a minority of instances that doesn't guarantee your availability. Contact your preferred communications provider for your home or business to order.

Capt Cretin, what is PN's ? I could pay be Visa presumably.

I have to say, that Sky appeals to me. Simply because I note the changeover can be done almost instantly, so would have landline. I understand also that we can take our phone number with us. I'm not keen on setting it up on-line, I prefer to speak to someone so when I get flustered, as I'm sure I will, things can be repeated. Almost daily, a sky rep is in town parked up, would he be an ideal person to chat too or are they more interesting in their bonus.

When Capt says PN he means Plus Net, you have to be careful using visa credit cards for regular payments as they can be difficult to stop. A Direct Debit can be stopped if needed, by requesting from your bank.
