Email after I have left an ISP

Hello I'm hoping some people here might be able to help with some research I'm trying to do.

I'm looking to find out once you leave an ISP (pretty much any ISP) how long they let you use their email service, or if you can pay them and use it indeffinitly?

Hopefully some people might know from experince, I have found calling them less than helpful most have no idea what I'm really asking and ISP's websites don't seem to mention it that much.

Any help would be great, thanks for reading.

When I left Freeserve (now Orange), I kept my account (and therefore email address) open indefinitely by visiting their himepage every 3 months - I don't know if they still let you do that though.

When I left NDO they tried billing me to keep my domain open (effectievely, to keep my email address open). I refused, it disappeared.

My Eclipse email address still works (I left them in June).

Basically, it'd down to the ISP, but it's worth remembering that in most cases you may still be able to recieve mail, but you won't be able to send mail on that account unless ypou are connected to the Internet using the ISP in question.

Now I have my own domain registered, so it is not dependent on my ISP.

I regularly use a couple of old tiscali email addresses years after leaving them, from the good old days of screaming.net and worldonline. I hadn't used them for a year or two at least, but I can send or receive irrespective of the isp logged in to. The same applies with an old btinternet (talk21) address that I recently found still worked after years of non-use.

However, when I left another isp, whose name I'm afraid I've completely forgotten*, the email account with them was cancelled, so it does depends on the isp.

*just remembered, it was virgin

Thanks for the replies. I realise it depends on which ISP, but I was trying to put something together across the board, so I would know how long each one, at least the main players, allows.

From what I can tell though it seems almost random, some get cut off, some get told they have to pay, others seem to never expire, but not many of the ISP's have a standard inside themselves as to how it works.

I think it must be such a low priority to clear these pop boxes out for them they do it when they have some down time maybe!

Thanks, and any more personal expriences might be useful as well.

AOL let you use your email account after you have cancelled.

Personally I always play it safe and have my e-mails with a separate hosting provider well away from the ISP, preferring to assume that the provider will simply wipe my address if and when I cancel. I’m often quite surprised by how many leave e-mails running after a customer exits because they don’t have to do that.

I forgot to mention PlusNet - my account was cancelled within a week of me leaving.
