End of contract

I have been with VM for 10 years this year, not by choice but down to what is available for useable internet connection, living in a town you think I would have FTTC but BT were not interested.

Anyway contract is due mid January, an AltNet when live at dinner today and I want to move to them that is no issue but what is the best way to deal with VM?

Do I ring up and say I do not wish to renew and as of my renewal cancel my service, is there a time period I am best doing this in or so I wait for that day and do it there and then? I am currently getting 500mb for £47 a month, my new package would be 1GB both way for less than half of that so unless they could do some deal for me to keep it as a secondary its bye bye VM, I've never had to deal with them at this level so any heads up would be great.

I would wait until your new service is up and running before you go and bargain with VM.

If you decide to move away from VM them about six weeks before the end of your VM contract send VM a recoded delivery letter stating you are providing a month notice. The letter needs to be sent to Sunderland, see at the bottom of this post.

Remember to include your contract number in the letter. It’s a bit of a pain having to send a recorded delivery letter but it’s the only real way to ensure that VM has your contract termination, many people have rang up and cancelled only to find the call has not been actioned and the recording of the call cannot be found!!!!

Virgin Media
You can send a letter to Virgin Media, Sunderland, SR43 4AA. Make sure to include your name, address and account number so we know who you are.

Thanks for the replies. New service is orderd and going in at the end of this month.

I was going to ring and barter with them see if they would offer me a cheap deal for staying and use it as a secondary as backup if the price was right, if not on the way they go.

Yeah I second the advise. Don't call VM until you have the altnet service up and running. Hopefully the installation will be smooth but you never know. Appointments get cancelled, weird issues (conduit blocked, etc) sometimes happen. As you said you can get the Altnet for less than half meaning that you might end up paying for Altnet for an extra 1-2 months depending on installation/activation dates. ~£40 for peace of mind is not that much.

Now to the very important part. The fact that your VM contract ends mid January does not release you from the 30 days notice clause. In other words for you to finish your existing VM contract mid January without penalties and without paying out-of-contract rip off prices you should be calling VM around mid December to cancel. I would call even 2-3 days earlier to be safe. If you don't they can roll you contract on a monthly basis ands charge you out-of-contract rip off prices even if you are out of contract. Make sure you get the "Disconnecting your Virgin Media services" email when you place your call. This can take a few hours sometimes but no longer than that. If you do not get the cancellation email they did not place the cancellation (common issue!). Also during this period you can call VM and call off the disconnection at any time if anything goes wrong with the Altnet.

Then sit down and enjoy your 1Gb symmetric low latency Alnet internet connection while VM retentions calls and offers "best deals" you know you are going to refuse...
