Entanet and the 21st Century

Having suffered with Pipex for the last couple of years, I thought it time for a change so after much searching, checking and reviewing I decided upon ADSL24 as my new isp.

My mac code was emailed to me within 48hrs so off I trotted to ADSL24's site to sort out the migration. No problems there, everything went sweetly, then received the email from Entanet with regards to payments. After clicking on the ebilling link, filled in all the payment details only to see an error message that said my debit card wasnt valid.

This morning I rang Entanet to sort this little problem out only to be told "We dont accept Visa Electron cards"

Entanet,Visa Electron is an accepted debit card all over the UK and has been for a number of years. WHAT DECADE ARE YOU IN???????

In one swoop, Entanet have stopped me joining ANY affiliated isp just because I havent got the correct plastic...THANKS A BUNCH.Kinda limits my options now, doesnt it?

Try Aquiss they are an Entanet supplied ISP but do their own billing and you can use paypal to pay.

www.aquiss.net not sure on which others have their own setup using entanet as the bACKBONE.

It's only use of the electron card that can't be used for an on-going payment, you should be able to make the initial payment with that card and set up a direct debit for all ongoing payments

Entanets's ebilling site wont accept Visa Electron even for the initial payment.Once one gets to the "payment details" section,Visa Electron doesnt even appear on the drop down menu of debit cards. I tried using the "Visa Debit Card" selection but kept getting "card not valid" error message.

Flakey,

As kits correctly pointed out, we can indeed accept this card for payments. As each payment on our system has to be approved, it complies with CCA rules to reuse a card.

Not everyone wants to use Direct Debit. You have to be flexiable to all customer needs and requirements.

Some banks won't let retailers accept electron on cardholder not present (CNP) transactions. Some won't allow them for installment payments either.

It's too much of a credit risk for the bank and the retailer.

Visa Electron was primarily designed for children's accounts and "basic" bank accounts.

It's equivalent to Solo from Mastercard.

It's nothing to do with the 21st century. It's about credit risk.

Yes and no. That's how it was in the early days. Things have moved on somewhat now and many retailers will accept payments online. (infact i'm aware of many businesses using them for at least 5 years, especially those who have Merchant accounts with Barclays.

Not so sure. You needed to be 18 to get an electron card back when it started. I would not class 18 year olds as children. (This has since been changed to 16; which i think was 2003 off the top of my head)

Yes and no.
Depends on the bank. We went to the pub with our merchant account and relationship managers. They said they wouldn't let us do it even though we now use their online solution to process cards.
They said it was a credit risk issue. The card is designed with a specific bracket of people in mind. If you don't meet the bank's requirements for Visa Debit (Delta) or Maestro, you might be offered an Electron or Solo. If you don't meet the requirements for those either you'll get (if available) a plain old cash card to use in an ATM.

Not so sure.

could u not pay with eclectron for initial payment over phone and then set-up direct debit

or go to aquiss whos rep has said they will accept the card and after all u will still get the good entanet service and support (although aquiss price structure differrent from other entanet resellers)

Spoke to Entanet on the phone earlier and was told that their system isnt geared up to accept Visa Electron in any way so therefore they couldnt accept an initial payment by card and therefore couldnt set up a d/d.

Had a look at the Aquiss packages. Unfortunately its a bit more than I wanted to pay for the same package from ADSL24.

Business's can flower this up any way they like; limiting credit risk, financial prudence etc but to me it smacks of discrimination. Its on the same level as someone saying "I dont trust you"

Thanks for the replies. I'll keep looking.

looks like u will have to get a standard debit card maestro card (formerly known as switch) these are generally universally accepted at least across europe

best of luck in your quest

If i recall correctly Aquiss do their own billing and do not use the billing engine of Enta's and they have several other things which is exclusive to them, I'm sure they have things like online radio in the members area and their own systems, which does cost extra money to make and develop.

If you want a true always on never off eat all you can bandwidth on a internet connection then get a leased line £2500 p/m up to 5-6k p/m depending on the line length.

In the ISP world the "you get what you pay for" way of working is critical now, everyone would love to buy a KIA and get a Ferrari.

It's not about trust. It's about risk. There's a big, big difference.

The worldwide credit crunch? That's because some banks in the USA and elsewhere didn't deal with the risk very well. Northern Rock didn't deal with it very well either.

A bank/building society make these decisions based on the facts before them. They look at you and your financial situation, as well as other factors, and decide how much of a risk you are. Financial Services are so heavily regulated that if a bank were to offer you a product (be it mortgage, overdraft, credit/debit card or whatever) and you got yourself between a rock and a hard place because it wasn't suitable and they hadn't looked at your circumstances, you can be sure the regulators would come crashing down on them like a tonne of bricks. It's called irresponsible lending.

"Basic" bank accounts are a relatively new concept. In days-past, if you didn't meet the minimum requirements you couldn't get an account at all.

You'll come up against things like this as you go through life. It's not discrimination by any stretch of the imagination.
