Ethernet tethering to use a phone as a wireless broadband device

Hi guys

I’m always in a never ending search to find a better 5G connection in London, UK for backup purposes.

I notice that with the numerous modems/routers I used from vodafone/ 3 etc my own little iPhone always have the best most reliable connection !

While I know Ethernet tethering is not possible on iPhone, it is on android and I wonder whether anyone has tried it ? Just need a usb-c to Ethernet adaptor which will also charge from Poe to usb-c so I can charge the phone too…

For charging:

Many thanks, actually i want that but with PoE charging but it does not look to exist (saw one a 100Mb speed though). Can all be done just wastes an extra port on my switch

You could combine the Lemorele thingy with this:

If you want to install the phone in a "remote" place, make sure it's out of the sun/heat and you have a way to "reset" it without going up a ladder or something. Maybe install a VNC server on it.

Exactly what I did :) will report on how far I get. I worry I won’t be able to get enough power to the PoE port to stop the phone draining when under load, but we’ll see (there’s a few other things hanging off that switch and I am not sure there’s much budget left)
Anecdotally a tethering device - especially with wifi off - will not use a lot of power, I think you could easily get away with 1A.

Agree. If all unnecessary functionality is turned off a fully charged tethered phone can last 2/3 days. You may wish to consider controlling the phone charge (not ethernet interface) so you minimise charging cycles and avoid ripple charging (regardless of how clever the power management in the phone may be).

yep that is exactly what i am doing.

I have also been looking at options for remote control as obviously it does not have the control pabnel a 'usual' modem would help. I did not think of VNC and i am not even sure how i would contact the phone as it looks to be operating in a bridge mode without giving out IP address but just giving me a WAN IP (which is exactly what i want really)

I have been usb tethering (and charging) my Samsung ZFold3 into a GL-AXT1800 mini router and getting excellent results.

The router is being charged via usb-c from my media box and the phone is charged simultaneously while it is tethered to the router.

I can also confirm that the router will operate when powered from a powerbank but I haven't tested to see if it will charge the phone at the same time. I will test this in the next couple of days.

So that connector to the phone is doing network connectivity AND charging ?
