FACTO Outage last night

Windblown

No outage on Zen CityFibre in the Leeds area. These services aren't really designed for running high-availability servers - if you are that bothered about your Plex server, put it in a datacentre.

This looks to me like a late night maintenance break rather than an unplanned outage.

Thanks.

No doubt you are right, it was planned maintenance. There is no way of knowing if this was just Coventry, just the West Midlands or just FACTCO.

Looking back, there have been no outages since I joined FACTO last year, so generally this connection is OK for the kind of informal server I run. My clients are from all over the world, so I expect one or two were inconvenienced at that time. To use a data centre would work out too expensive, and configuring for Plex technically difficult and horrifically time consuming.

Thanks. I keep my Plex and Synology NAS bang up-to-date always. I also use an extra security layer for Synology log ins. Although Plex currently distances private servers from legal problems, I keep everything behind VPN or proxy servers.

ISP carries out network maintenance on circuits all the time over night. They will pick a bunch hosted on a cluster and work on them for whatever reason. Could be migration to a new core router or new link. They may have to bring down the service for a couple of hours.

The point though is that they dont provide a guarantee of circuits that are affected unless its major work.

An ISP like Factco / Cityfibre etc wont tell you about these works unless absolutely critical.

But for the people that have business grade connections that pay 7 - 10 x more for it - They get things like the below;

Dear Partner,

Maintenance will be carried out during the specified maintenance window below. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Please refer to attachment for the impacted circuits:

Those prices mean that the customer pays for high availability (Previously mentioned in this thread) and as such any downtime has to be justified.

Surprise, surprise! FACTO is no more. It's now...
