Fastest speed?

Sometimes there's a post on this forum, with a speedtest screenshot, showing over 1GB download. I've been asking SMARTY (3) for 5G access but even with 5G it might not be fastest. SMARTY tell me there's congestion locally which won't help. I have a newish phone with 5G. Will 5G give me 1GB or faster?

As always, it depends. There are no guarantees. Though I do question, what can you do with 1Gbps vs 30Mbps (other than large file downloads would be quicker to complete, but how often do you do those, especially on a phone)

Well, map updates 1GB or more (Here & Tomtom), software updates 3GB sometimes, Videos without stuttering. et al.

That’s locations with full 100mhz spectrum available via Three, so it is more likely also available on smarty as they allegedly have no restrictions across both networks.

I’d put it down to masts and the relevant spectrum and backhaul available to reach said speeds.

1GB at 30Mbps = 4.5mins.
How urgently do you need that new housing development 200miles away from you on your phone map?!
Are phone manufacturers still doing whole rom updates rather than incrementals? 3GB at 30Mbps (15mins) and another 15mins or so to actually install... not something I'd generally do while out-and-about, rather it'd be an automatic/background download and installation that happens overnight while charging.
Youtube 1080p 60fps has a bitrate range of 4.5Mbps-9Mbps, that shouldn't buffer at 30Mbps, and is there really a need for more resolution on a 6" screen but if so, 1440p 60fps at 9-18Mbps or 4k 30fps at 13-34Mbps should both be fine.

In a map download, it's not possible to pick which part, local or distant to you, is downloaded.
Xiaomi still supplies software as a big file. sometimes it's worth going to a different mast with 3CA instead of one band.
I'm using my phone as broadband but watch YT at 360p to avoid that annoying spinning circle. It's not a constant speed, that's half the problem.

Gavin, you just won the "640K memory ought to be enough for anybody" award.. :)

Yes, 30 Mbps probably satisfies the needs of 99,9% of the global population at the moment, but at the same time we have to acknowledge the inner drive for the shinier, faster thing. We all want it, we all need it, preciousss... :)

That's kind of my point, if providers provided a consistent 30Mbps (whether that was over either 4G or 5G, it wouldn't matter) I highly doubt you'd really notice between that and the 'wow' 5G speeds that you will have seen in speedtests.
Those high speed speedtests that you may keep seeing will over time likely get fewer and fewer as more people/devices use 5G and the 5G gets more saturated unless more spectrum is refarmed over to 5G to counteract the increased load.

Edit: @Lucian I'm not saying it's not a nice to have - everyone would love it everywhere! - and in the future I'm sure there'll be a some use-cases where massively higher speeds would be desirable, though I think everyone is having a hard time envisioning what those might be.

I' m quite happy with my 30/20, 4K streaming is fine with that speed, even my rediculously large XBox game updates get there eventually.

Would it be nice for them to complete a little faster?, yes of course, but that's what my forthcoming 3 pole of wonder is for right?

Never have any problems at all on my mobile either.

Just my 2p's worth. ☺️

All for a tenner too, can't be bad. :D

In the past it used to be piracy (where I'm from), when large files could not be "streamed", so you had to download the whole thing. The likes of Netflix alleviated some of that.
Who knows what the future might bring, like you say.

Ah the Napster, Pirate Bay and uTorrent days Lucian, my friend told me all about these things. ☺️

I occasionally dl > 50Gb cartographic files, but as this data is slow in changing, not an issue.
However live realtime update, > 1Gb, which takes a while to process would be nice.
30Mbs would be fine for me, but I only get 22Mbs (and there are those even worse off than me), which I pay for the same as those luckier to live closer to the over congested dslam.
Why is this, well the BDUK rollout failed to understand the laws of physics, ftpod is too risky/pricey and OR have the government over a barrel.

OK, I know as time goes on, more users will join and because of the limited radio spectrum speeds will drop. I seem to get bursts of data which mess up my video causing the spinning circles on YT. Maybe this is just on Three? I was hoping the addition of 5G would help, as 3 locally seem to have dropped band 20 which helped fill in some data lows. See photo.

My download does this a lot on nPerf as well, never understood why.

Don’t buy a Hyundai Electric Car if you want to avoid large downloads. Mine updates it’s maps infotainment and charging database once a month when the car is connected to the home Wi-Fi and the download is between 26 and. 30gb each time. Would seem so much easier to download map tiles on the fly as you need them

Seems a good reason to avoid that make, unless it can be disabled. And a hopelessly inefficient mapping system as well. I just looked on my phone and my Satnav app occupies 799.4meg for full UK and ROI road mapping.

30 odd gig every day comes to around 1TB a month, plenty of people don't get that much allowance in any case.

My Ioniq only updates the map with traffic updates. These are very small. Hyundai don’t do OTA updates. That is done by the dealer at service time. More details on the Hyundai forum.

Didnt say OTA, you have to download the maps on your home PC and extract them to a USB stick, then update the car, very time consuming 30gb download, then extracting to stick, then install on car that takes 30 to 40mins.

There is no option to update just the UK its a full Europe + Russia map 30gb

On the Ioniq5 they are due to start doing OTA updates in a couple of months time, for the original and the Kona it will still be download to your PC and update.

Used to be?

As I said, Netflix/PrimeVideo alleviated a lot of that, though piracy itself never really went away completely for various (and valid) reasons.
