FCC to Approve Powerline

This is amazing - on one hand we have Web Buddy, claiming that the few milliwatts of power that ADSL uses has been known to cause interference, and on the other we have splatteredcat claiming that PLC is not a worry, because you need immense amounts of power to cause interference.

Furthermore, Web Buddy claims a self-shielded, well terminated, predictable impedance balanced circuit like ADSL interferes, but an unshielded unpredicatble wire with discontinuities and unpredicatable and changing terminations using higher frequencies like PLC won't cause problems. HF rarely propagates and you need a very good antenna. Planes don't use HF. Narrowband signals aren't subject to interference. DSL is just like PLC. I could go on and on.

This debate has grown tiresome. Perhaps someone could start a PLC advocacy thread to discuss press releases and leave the qualified people to discuss technical issues and reality here.

I never said anything of the sort. I was merely countering your claims about PLC having consequnces for long haul flights and that the relatively small amounts of radiated interference would have negligible effects on (almost redundant) aircraft HF COMM due to the massive transmitting power of airborne stations. Again, any navaids we had close to HF were decomissioned years ago and the only possible candidate for interference left (ADF) is slowly being shut down.

If you're going to paraphrase, do it properly. What I said was that with the advent of satcom based solutions HF is becoming obsolete, and that we went through a very expensive mandatory requirement 2 years ago to harden VHF based systems.
