Fed up with Norton software

Its bloody awful. Its dire. And I personally have had to mend computers 'infected' with it in double figures now.

This is given away with almost every PC, and recommended by many 'experts'.

It blocks things without even telling you, for example a vodafone mobile PMCIA card. It said it was connected, working fine, but nothing on web pages. Course, disable Norton and it works.

Did you know it even restricts you from pinging? Although in this case it did ask if it needed to be unblocked!

Im almost in compter expert territory, but not quite. And even I find it hard to use, especially when it blocks things without telling you.

And yes, its still has elements that wont uninstall.

Makes me so angry that its always recommended, when its crap. And the virus detection isnt even that great, especially compared to something like NOD32.

I ended up uninstalling it, and putting avast (free!) on there.

Rant over. Grrrr.

Gawd i had somebad experiences with Nortan myself, its way to protective. It stopped me using certain programmes before!

Norton is an expensive bit of oversized resource hogging junk which doesnt even do its job.. and SLOWS down computers soooo much.

Your better off with AVG or NOD32.

Ive not used Avast but I expect that also does the job.

I have had same experience with my customers, they all swear by it until it screws up their computer or I install Avast, run a boot-time scan & show them how inefficent it has been.

One of my customers droppped off his computer saying that it wouldn't boot up into Win XP, I disabled all norton/symantec from the "startup" & "Services" folder of the Ms config utility in safe mode & the computer booted up.

Packard Bell laptops come with it pre-installed & no option to uninstall it either through "Add/Remove Programs" or their own "Smart Restore", you have to go to Symantec's website & download a special uninstall utility.

One thing has anyone else had the problem that when you install Avast if you ever decide to remove it and want to install another say AVG, Panda etc. they all come up and say you cant install because etrust/Avast is still installed.
However its been removed and i can find no trace of it.

I know at least 7 people who have had this problem in the past

No, but then I havent tried removing it yet. Interesting. I have to with my laptop soon, its moaning at me about the license needs renewing.

That could be a pain, as Avast was my new favourite free AV. I stopped using AVG because it really misses a lot of viruses, even with the database kept bang up to date.

i agree. I was using AVG, but NOD32 is the bomb. Its not found a single thing on my computer yet.
Can anyone offer advise on how to contract a not so deadly virus, just so I can test out Nod32 detection capabilities?

I have been using Avast for some time now and have removed it with no problems (just to try another) but always go back to it.

Never come across the problem you have seen, I always use the windows add/remove program to uninstall it.

No need to uninstall Avast when renewing your license, just go to their website and confirm your details and it's automatically renewed with the same serial number.

Just keep a copy of serial (just in case):D

I check various virus tests now and then, and AVG doesnt do so well. NOD32 (which I have) always wins hands down.

You are paying for Nod !

I have also scanned my PC using a couple of online scanners and nothing has shown.

NOD32 wins hands down every time. It makes everything else look substandard.

I've tried the free AV solutions, but they just don't come close.

At the end of the day it all depends on how much you value your data.

going by google it gave me this site if you want a TEST FILE WITH A VIRUS ON IT.

HOWEVER DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have NOT tried it or going to attempt to infect my own pc to see if my scanner picks it up.

Looks safe enough to me:
It is safe to pass around, because it is not a virus, and does not include any fragments of viral code. Most products react to it as if it were a virus (though they typically report it with an obvious name, such as "EICAR-AV-Test").
