Fibre 900 FTTP MikroTik PPPoE set up...help!

Confession first - I might not be clever enough to operate a MikroTik router!

I have Fibre 900 and problems setting up my MikroTik to replace the Smart Hub2. I think I have the right credentials -

User = bthomehub@btbroadband.com

and

Password = BT

The MikroTik has the standard configuration loaded including firwall etc, with little or no changes. Apart from adding the PPPoE client.

I have loaded the IP6 package as I read somewhere this was important.
I have selected 'Peer DNS'

And the interface shows 'Connected' and 'Running' and I can see bits and bobs of data on the graph at the bottom of the page.

I've added Google 8.8.8.8 to my DNS page and I can see the BT DNS servers listed - which makes me think the connection is good... but

If I ping www.google.com or indeed anything else from within the MIkroTik interface it times out.

And there's no internet on anything connected to the lan ports of the MikroTik. My wife is saying 'buy a new router' and I'm looking enviously at my son's Ubiquiti kit.

Any suggestions?

Yep, Mikrotik routers are generally not a good bet for the inexperienced. However, from what you've said I suspect that you have no default route added. First thing to check on that front is that you've ticked the "Add Default Route" box in the PPPoE interface settings, directly below the "Add Peer DNS" box that you've already ticked.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the tip. Sadly default route is engaged but no joy! Might it be a NAT issue? A quick run down of the settings...

Status = connected , running

Type = PPPoE Client

Actual MTU 1480
Interfaces = ether1

User=bthomehub@btbroadband.com
Password = BT

Profile = default

Use Peer DNA = yes
Add default route = yes
Default Route Distance = 1
Allow - everything ticked

local address 86.190.25.18
remote address 172.16.16.76

in /IP DNS

Servers
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Dynamic Servers show
81.139.57.100
81.139.56.100

Which I think are BT servers.

If I ping www.google.com on ether1

I get a host ip of
142.250.179.228
and everything times out.

Solution

First follow the guide here

The web version is here.

https://systemzone.net/mikrotik-configuration-with-pppoe-wan-connection/

I didn't want to remove the default config (because it has the firewall rules in it) but in the end I couldn't get it work without a blank canvas in the router. So remove the default config!

Use these credentials.

User = bthomehub@btbroadband.com and Password = BT

Then apply the firewall rules - I got mine here
