Fibrus rollout in North East England

Any word on Fibrus expanding in North East England?

There was an article a few months ago about expansion but then nothing, not even a press release.

one minor thing is I noticed their availability checker no longer says GB postcodes are invalid which is good.

Guessing you mean this one?

We don't know much about how Fibrus approach these things (i.e. what stage they're at when a location is announced for the future build), but usually there's a period of engineering surveys and the operator may also have to appoint contractors, secure permissions/permits etc., to help with some of the builds. As such, there can be a bit of a wait between an announcement and the start of a physical rollout.

Not to mention that all rollout plans should be considered tentative, until they actually take place.

Yep that’s the one, I’m in Ashington.

At the moment I’ve no gigabit option but VM are building in the town (XGS-PON) and we’re also “building now” according to openreach for FTTP.

With Fibrus that may end up being a 3rd option all available around the same time.

The only odd thing showing on bidb is lots of “railsite telecom” works but miles away from where they normally operate (ie near railways). They’re installing new chambers near openreach ones and also pulling fibre cables between existing ducts.

With PIA it’s hard to know on who’s behalf some contractors are doing it for.

Railsite Telecom also invest and support some alternative full fibre networks, such as Alncom, which may be related.

I’ve heard of Alncom but they tend to focus on the more rural parts of the county so it would be interesting if they expanded south.

I used the Grain checker and signed up for updates and got the message below.

Of all the options Grain offer a symmetrical 1Gbit connection so that would probably be my preferred option - but in reality I’ll likely go with whoever gets here first!

What next?

As we have plans to come to your area shortly, we have captured your details in our system. Once we are on your street, our Customer Service team will be in touch to let you know we're on our way, and discuss next steps.

I think I found what railsite are doing.

They have “Alncom on behalf of commsworld” listed on the barriers near one of their works today.

I think the works are linked to this contract with the local council.
