Firewall question. Expert help needed :)

I have a wireless broadband modem connected to my pc by USB and I'm using a Zonealarm firewall (Zonealarm suite) and up until recently I had no problem with it (except for the high number of intrusions medium and high detected though I think this is normal). But a few days ago it detected a new network out of the blue. The ip was 192.168.1.0 or something like that. Zonealarm wouldn't allow a block and so I had to set it to internet in the zone. I've tried various forums to find out what this is and why it has come up suddenly. My modem seems to look for this 192.168.1.0 when I first switch it on (I know this because I run an ipconfig/all and I can see it there under Ethernet local area connection) and then once the modem has started up and the firewall is on I then connect in my usual way to my ISP so I end up with three things in the zones in Zonealarm, a usbnic network adapter ip, a loopback adapter ip and the new network 192.168.1.0. Is all this normal and NOT a security compromise?

If I do a ipconfig/release and get the ethernet local area connection to reset to 0.0.0.0 I can still go online. I've yet to find out why this is and what significance is despite searching for days on the net. Seems there is a real sad lack of experts out there on this one.

Is 192.168.1.0 some sort of gateway router thingy (sorry but I don't know the techincal terms) that my wireless modem needs to connect to in order to get connected to my ISP?

Is it safe?

I have done many hackerwatch probes etc and nothing can get through. Apparently, my machine is secure becauseall the ports are invisible or something, but I'm still a little concerned about this 192.168.1.0 new network found by zonealarm.

If you've read all that, thanks for your patience. Any help appreciated.

Cheers. :)

192.168.1.0 is ur subnet which ur USB wireless adapter will look in order for it to work. nothing to worry, don't worry about the Ethernet's IP as you are not using it. it can be any thing.

My best advice is to get rid of zone alarm. if you got a router and enable windows firewall you pretty much safe, Zone alarm will just create needless panics like this. and don't think they are any better than windows built in ones.

Just enable the wpa on your wireless tho

Thanks for replying. I've detailed this problem on various forums and hadn't had a sensible answer or at least an answer I could make sense of ... until this one. I suspected it might just be Zonealarums (as I like to call it) giving me the sh*its for nothing, :)

Thanks again.

Zone alarm trying 2 justify It's existence by just creating this type of alerts. Norton firewall use to do this too. but it had a option 2 turn off alerts. dont know Zone alarm got that option
